Definitely wouldn't want him at Newcastle and he'd be nowhere near our main man. I'd rate Gayle, Mitro and Ayoze ahead of him too.
I know Gayle didn't do great in PL with Palace but think he's a better finisher then Long. Mitro and Ayoze are both younger then Long and offer more imo. |

He averages a goal every 4 games, which is actually a pretty decent return at EPL level, yet for some reason people seem to think it's down in the depths of awful. Coupled with his overall contribution to the team, he'd be an outstanding signing for any promoted team. In truth he should be aiming higher than that though, he's a mid-table quality player, not relegation fodder. |

The role of the number 9 has changed drastically over the last 5/10 years.
Scoring goals is not their primary function anymore especially as most will have 2/3 number 10s playing behind and in and around them. |

Except this season it isn't one in 4! His main problem is a lack of consistency, he seems to go on spurts of form that swing between good and awful. He is certainly a player that is over-rated by Irish fans, especially as we love a guy who is seen to give a 100% but you need more than that at the highest level, especially when you have a poor first touch. |

He was truly rubbish at Saints this year...He will be remembered fondly because of last season, his goal in the semi final and his work rate

You can't judge Long on this season any more than you can on last season. Overall in his career he's averaged 1-4 pretty much everywhere, it's a true reflection of his goalscoring ability. He may go through periods where he doesn't score much, but he's rarely awful. He always contributes a la Middlesbrough last week where he got an assist and won a penalty. The first touch criticism is old news too, he's developed his technical skills immensely since his early days and his touch/link-up play etc. are all up to a reasonable level now. |

They have certainly improved but a 'reasonable level' really isn't good enough and shows exactly what he is, a reasonable player and not a good one. I am not sure he always contributes either, I think that is a bit cliched because he runs around a lot. There are several games I have watched him where he offers very little apart from running around a lot and I don't think that is enough.

I'd say Puel is gone so Long should stay put, unless he's told to f off by the manager

Looks as though Shane is almost 100% out of the Austria game. Huge huge loss.

I don't think I've seen a player recover from injury more quickly than Long. |

Odd that he got a foot injury last weekend bad enough to keep him out for more than a month and yet there was so little coverage of the injury, or it's seriousness until he didn't make the bench of the midweek game.
