10 gls in his 94 lge games over last 3 years. Long may be at a premier league but he is not premier league quality on a consistent basis. He has been at a stable club on good contract in and out of the team. He has only scored more than 10 lge goals in a season twice in his career. Time to forget about likes of him, McClean and focus on bringing younger players through.

Not really much chance to bring a younger player through for March!

By Micks own admission he will stick again with the tried and tested, Shane Long is a tried and tested Ireland international who has scored some very crucial goals. At the very least his workrate/pace/energy/aerial ability mean he should be picked ahead of Scott f*cking Hogan or James Collins who will be back off to League 1 shortly.

Beyond baffling that Mick will still pick Collins and Hogan over him.

To be fair it's a sorry state of affairs that any of the players are considered for the squad.

He’s had at least 2 or 3 seasons when he looks like he is fading and then he comes back and is one of the top performing strikers for a number games. Even if not scoring goals but causing damage. He’s not dead and buried yet

Really hope he gets a good run in the Southampton team now and can get himself back in contention for the playoffs.

Playing well away to Newcastle.

It would be interesting if Mick was picking a squad now, if he was still leaving him out for journeymen lads not long out of division 1 it would be hard not to think that maybe it's something personal.

Long, Connolly, Parrott, McGoldrick, Robinson are who we should be picking from. Mick is nuts if he continues to pick Collins and Hogan.

There is no excuse for Long not hitting the target.

Any half decent striker scores that.

held off replying earlier in case i initially misread it (in viewing terms) and got it wrong. Having just watched it again on MOTD, I stand by my initial response to the OP. It was an incredibly difficult ‘chance’. He had to totally readjust and go back and then turn and shoot. Now you may say, well he’s a striker and thats his job, and you’re right to a degree. However he had little to no time. There was a defender close by and he was only going to get one bite. He was unlucky as his positioning was actually very good initially, just the shot was so powerful it rebounded the way it did.
