The counter argument is that  Bulgaria was barely a training match and Milan didn't strike me as playing at full tempo. International friendly matches gift players time and space as there is barely a tackle and Milan's main aim was no injuries and a win.
Despite that he may still deserve his place in the squad due to the shortage of options.

Of course and I am not talking in absolutes but looking at all of the options available to us and so we have different options etc I think Byne deserves his place esp with Brady and o Dowda missing the game

Even if he is in the squad I would be surprised if he gets a game. Maybe if form and fitness were better he could have been looked at in the NL games, but given the criticism Kenny has already taken he would be a huge gamble, even as a substitute.
I hope we don't see him as it will be just desperation if he does appear.

Great to see Conor picking up where he left off last season and being a pivotal figure for Villa. It's amazing how differently journalists see his performances to laughing stocks on an internet forum. Then again, they're paid to watch entire games as opposed to watching the highlights on Sky Sports News and pretending they did. Who knows, maybe another few MOTM calibre performances and he will be as good as Harry Arter?

HOURIHANE 7

Villa's danger man throughout the opening 45 and put in threatening delivery after threatening delivery. "F*** sake, man!" was Hourihane's yell of frustration as his Villa teammates kept failing to get on the end of his cutting free-kicks. Looked bang up for it but cut a frustrating figure when he was subbed off with half-hour to go. A good 60-minute performance by the Irishman.

Conor Hourihane

Pressed and probed as he always does in the heart of midfield. His work-rate got the rewards when he spanked home McGinn's set into the far right-hand corner with, wait for it, his weaker right foot. Tidy in possession and his decision making was good. The Irishman's coming into his own. Assisted Mings' goal, too. Quality. 8.5

Hopefully he carries that form over. I would be very surprised if it wasn't the midfield three that started in Bulgaria that are picked next time out.

You have to wonder if some of these journalists were asleep watching the game when Conor actually wasn’t subbed until 76 mins. Thought he had a good enough game

Maybe you're still half-asleep? He was subbed off in the 60th minute of the Sheffield United game and the 76th minute of the Fulham game.

Hourihane and Robinson make Whoscored team of the week. Great to see most of our players heading into a crucial set of games in good form.

I would say it is a very realistic assessment of the situation, can you explain why it isn't? Just because it goes against what you want doesn't make it 'pathetic'.
Byrne is probably a 50-50 to make the squad. He is incredibly unlikely to start the game, even with injuries, so his best hope is off the bench. The only way an attacking midfielder will come on is if Ireland are desperate for a goal.
You can wish otherwise,  but that's just reality.

Ross Barkley signs on loan for Aston Villa in a move that is certain to see Hourihanes playtime suffer greatly.

I imagine their first choice will be Luiz, McGinn, Barkley.

Barkley would usually play more along the line of Grealish's role than Hourihane's, but they could well try to play him as an orthodox centre-mid.
We're decent enough..

I would think this will be another potential problem for Hourihane. Barkley has done very well playing centrally for Everton in the past and a lot of Chelsea fans are disappointed to see him go out for the season. I’d imagine Conor will be under more pressure than the other Villa midfielders. Hopefully he’ll rise to the challenge

Cant be good for Hourihane. Cant seem to start two games in a row as it is and seems to get subbed a lot...

I feel barkley will limit his time on the pitch further this season.

definitely don’t think it will be good for him initially. But Barkley blows hot and cold and Villa still don’t have a massive squad!
