Those last few season in which he has also been criticised by Villa and Barnsley supporters. Probably because it is warranted criticism. He was consistently criticised by Barnsley supporters for going missing and being anonymous. He was their top scorer at one point and they still criticised him for it. It is now the same at Villa. A CM who disappears for 89 minutes will always be criticised.

He has a fantastic peg on him. He will score goals, he has a great shot, a great cross and is all around very good at striking the ball. He is meant to be a CM though and he offers little beyond that which is why supporters of every club he's played for get frustrated with him. You can point to all his goals, but the thing is he does absolutely nothing beyond that. Therefore, he needs his teammates to carry him. He will never control a midfield, he will never dominate a midfield, he'll never contribute an all around CM performance. What he will do is disappear for 89 minutes and then pop up in a good spot and score or set up a goal. He's fantastic at it, and at the end of the day goals are what counts but you need a team to compensate those 89 minutes where he does practically nothing. It is why he'll always get criticism. It is why he'll always be a divisive figure and an enigma. On one hand he doesn't offer enough to warrant a CM spot, but at the same time he has consistently scored/created goals which is too important to bench.

Anonymity is the one attribute (besides the ability to run around a lot) that our midfielders possess in abundance. Being able to create or score goals is an invaluable asset though to this Irish team that struggles so much at this aspect of the game so Hourihane has to be a shoo in on this basis.
Also he is easily the best option for connecting the football with Duffy's head in the penalty box which is our only reliable and realistic threat of getting the ball in the opposition net.

That's a lot of verbiage to say:
He scores goals.
He doesn't do much more.
Central midfielders should do more.
That's why criticism of him is justified.

He's playing for one of the worst Premier League teams for a reason. He's not a bad player, honest as they day is long it looks like but what do people want/expect from a Guy who's played 7/8 Premier League games in his career.
Jackie Charlton, Eoin Hand
Johnny Giles. Ireland
Mick McCarthy, Stephen Staunton

Could have had his names in the headlines tonight. Thought he was about to condemn Liverpool to first defeat, uncharacteristic of him not to take the shot on when put through. Taking the chance
himself seemed the smarter answer (with the benefit of hindsight)

Doesn't matter, he'll be playing anyway. Browne didn't do anything V Swiss to suggest he's a better option, and Cullen likes to move the ball quickly and keep possession, which probably rules him out as well.

He was a holy show on Monday night. He’s a lightweight who’s often anonymous. Hendrick gets a lot of flack, deservedly, but this guy shouldn’t be near the team - maybe even the squad.

He’s not great but is surely the better option of the two

Hourihane scores goals and gets assists for villa in the Premier league.

Why wouldn't he be in the squad
