Stephen Gleeson played in 2007 under Staunton. Didn't get another call up for nine years. |
I thought you'd know the answer. Alex Stevenson famously had to wait 14 years between his first and second caps (1932 to 1946) but that's an ancient history.
Do you have a list of Ireland's oldest debutantes? Asking because if Amond were to make his, he'd be close to 31. Especially outfield players. I know Slaven and Coyne were 29 when they made theirs. Shaun Williams must be up there.

I know Forde was 31 when he was given his debut by Trapattoni, but I'm not sure if he was the oldest

Amond is only 30, so he definitely won't be the oldest. I'd say Williams was late 31/32 on his first start.

Jack tried to bring in Steve Bruce for the '94 World Cup but he wasn't eligible. He would've been making his debut in his mid thirties!

Bruce was eligible, Ferguson refused to allow him to declare though due to the fact he would have taken up one of the "foreigner places" in the United squad if he had.

Pretty sure he wasn't eligible by then as he'd taken an England B cap by then. The Fergie thing is just a myth for the afte dinner circuit.

Correct. His England B appearance was in 1987.

This is the best I can do, but the date of birth of a lot of players who played before the second world war are tough to find, so there could be more that I've listed here
Player Date of birth Debut Age Home Score Away Bill Lacey 24-09-1889 23-04-1927 37 Republic of Ireland 1-2 Italy George Moulson 06-08-1914 23-05-1948 33 Portugal 2-0 Republic of Ireland Florrie Burke 07-08-1918 17-10-1951 33 Republic of Ireland 3-2 Germany Noel Kelly 28-12-1921 07-03-1954 32 Luxembourg 0-1 Republic of Ireland Jack O'Reilly 07-05-1914 16-06-1946 32 Portugal 3-1 Republic of Ireland Shaun Williams 19-10-1986 28-05-2018 31 France 2-0 Republic of Ireland David Forde 20-12-1979 24-05-2011 31 Republic of Ireland 5-0 Northern Ireland Christy Giles 07-07-1919 26-11-1950 31 Republic of Ireland 2-2 Norway Terry Mancini 04-10-1942 21-10-1973 31 Republic of Ireland 1-0 Poland Billy Hayes 07-11-1915 30-09-1946 30 Republic of Ireland 0-1 England

Great work!
I wonder why it took so long for Mancini to win his first cap. He had a very decent top flight career for QPR and Arsenal.
