just looking at an old school Pats website that was looked after by my very close friend Peter Ryan (known to many irish football fans as WWS from internet forums) who sadly passed away a few years back and came across some old school photos

Tom, was the Tolka pic the one from the FAI Cup Quarter Final? I remember that one was the game that went to penalties. Robbie Deveraux scored with about 5 mins to go for Pats and then Stephen Geoghegan scored about 7 mins into stoppage time. Shels won on penos that nite. Liam Kelly scoring the winner |

Think he even wore number 12 as well!! Back in the days with the ridiculous squad numbers at Pats. Ian Gilzean wearing number 41!!!

no blue man the pic was taken in Jan 2001
that EPIC cup quarter final tie was 1998, we won the league in the last five minutes on the last day to pip shels (who only needed a draw away to dundalk for the title).
we met four times in the space of two weeks. first game was the first cup tie with Pats equalising at the death, shels admittedly having the better of it that night in Inchicore - that was a friday night game. Then we had the cup replay the following monday, right battle with shels equalising at the death - pats having had the better of it (with ten men if memory serves right).
there was then a league draw between the two sides on the following friday night - 0-0, both sides knackered from the previous cup games.
Then ridiculously, the second replay at tolka the following monday went to extra time when geoghegan scored in the seventh minute of injury time totally against the run of play after Devereaux put is ahead. after extra time, the game went to penalties - Kelly scoring the winning peno.
it was the height of the rivalry, the two biggest clubs of the nineties and each night there were huge crowds. second replay must have had 9000 at it. Drama, passion, rivalry, goals, red cards, tough tackles and heartbreak - the games had it all. as much as it was hurtful at the time (because pats would probably have won the cup - and double - afterwards after soooo many years, and considering shels had beaten us in 96 final after a replay, having scored at the death in the original game, tony sheridan with a fabulous goal to be fair), it was still probably the most entertaining live series of games i was ever at. proper winter football too

Ah rite, I remember the 2nd replay was a bumper crowd and when I seen the pic, it was the only game that jumped out. Freezing nights, huge crowds and watery soup at half time. The 2 cup final games were amazing too. Alan Gough getting sent off at Lansdowne, Brian Flood initially refusing to go in goal, then when he did, made a save and walked behind the line to remove ticker tape with the ball in his hand and there was no goal!!!!. Then Gough saving a penalty in the replay at Dalymount and Geoghegan scoring smashing lob on the break to win it! Those 3 or 4 seasons were one of the best Ive seen in this league

the gas thing about the 1996 replay blue man was gough did save the penalty (eddie gormley to put pats 2 up iirc) after he should he should have been suspended for the replay following the straight red card (which did stop pats going two up in the original game at lansdowne). the geoghegan goal was literally from the break after the peno was saved with pats napping at the back!
