Some of the reviews were hilarious. LOL

Will probably end up being a cult film.

Went to a 10.30pm showing in the Lighthouse after a heap of pints last week. It was an absolute laugh riot so on that basis I'd recommend it - but the scoops were a pretty key element. I don't think it was created to be watched sober.

I think he actually had his premiere in the Lighthouse and the audience burst out laughing during it. LOL
Wings? They're only the band The Beatles could have been.

Infuriates me TBH. Some badly rated movies can be quite good.

Fallen is one I mentioned here.

I don't use Rotten Tomatoes any more. It is ridiculous the number of films on it that get stupidly high scores including those that are given 100%. It is to the point that their ratings don't actually mean anything.

Yeah. IMDB is the one he uses. Ignore the Rotten Tomatoes part.

Midnight Express

Enjoyed this wan. Unremittingly bleak but has strong performances, great cinematography and a good camaraderie among the main cast. Also a scene, later satirised by The Simpsons, that made me burst my rusty sheriff's badge laughing when I realised this was what The Simpsons was referring to; one of my favourite Simpsons jokes. The lead is the spit of Brad Pitt and the main antagonist is the spit of James Gandolfini by the way. If you love high tension and enjoyed Shawshank Redemption, give this wan a go.

Driving Miss Daisy

You can tell I'm running out of things to watch. Real Oscar bait, this one. Auld crotchety Southern Jewish lady (some auld bird) is no longer permitted to drive by her good ol' boy son (Dan Aykroyd), so he employs a genial black man (Morgan Freeman) to be her driver. In no mood to lose her independence, she takes a while to warm to him but eventually he breaks down her barriers. Good performances by all, though Freeman's character displays all the excesses of the "magical negro" trope and some of the writing is beyond trite and on the nose; thinking on a scene where old lady witnesses first hand police discrimination of Freeman's character as he drives her to an event. Some of the ways it ties in stuff like civil rights and MLK is also a bit formulaic and tacky. A nice diversionary watch, it ambles by like a soft breeze, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again.

Watched Titanic for first time in probably 10 years last night.

Have to say the last hour and a half with the sinking of the ship is fantastic, a special effects masterpiece by Cameron

Watched it last Christmas for probably the first time since its release and thought it still stands up well for a near 25 year old film, though the CGI could do with a bit of an update for a re release / special edition in the future.

Gold with Matthew McConaughey

IMDB Score 6.7/10            McG score 7.5/10

Enjoyed this one. A down on his luck prospector, mad for the gargle (McC) teams up with an indiana jones type geologist to pinpoint and mine for gold in Indonesia. Many highs and lows along the way, good ending and a great soundtrack. An entertaining fare and very underrated imo.

Red Dragon

Remake/reimagining/whatever of Manhunter and prequel to The Silence of the Lambs. Edward Norton leads a superb cast supplemented by Anthony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes, Harvey Keitel and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Great movie but how could you go wrong with a cast like that? Think I last saw it at the cinema when it came out so really enjoyed the story and all the twists and turns it took. Great pacing and methodology to it. More effective and resonating than the over-the-top gore of Hannibal which came out around the same time.

Brokeback Mountain

Beautifully shot and filmed movie that could've had at least 45 minutes of its runtime excised. Strong opening and closing hour but lags a bit in the middle. Heard a lot about Michelle Williams performance at the time but didn't think it was that good; I think Linda Cardellini outshined her in a smaller role. Likewise, I think you could've replaced Jake Gyllenhaal with pretty much anyone else and the movie wouldn't have suffered. His acting felt really performative in contrast to Heath Ledger, who was the real star of the show here.

Freeway

Satirical urban take on the Red Riding Hood fairytale with Reese Witherspoon trailed by an infamous serial killer played by Kiefer Sutherland. Oliver Stone was involved with this movie and it has all of his excesses at their worst. Truly unbearable stuff. Stick with NBK.

Point Break

Very good. Despite his obvious limitations, Keanu Reeves is always a good onscreen presence and Patrick Swayze is very good as the surfer-cum-bankrobber he goes undercover to catch. Also has 90s character actors like Gary Busey and John C. McGinley in support. The action scenes are superbly choreographed and the chemistry between Reeves and Swayze is good. Aesthetically a very nice movie to look at with the LA setting and hues. Quite similar to Heat, except an hour shorter and more light-hearted.
