I guess I struggle with historical fiction, be it in literature or film, but I thought it was very poor and overly fantastical, from what I remember. I genuinely believe people enjoyed the subject more than the actual film.

Great film alright, another great Hitler based film I'd recommend is
Look who's back (believe it's on the Netflix) Comedy where Hitler comes back to life in modern Germany and becomes a TV personality as part of a satrical TV show

Didn't enjoy that at all. Generally not a comedy movie fan. Ever since i first saw Life of Brian i knew watching any sort of comedy after that would be sh*te.

PM, whilst we're on films based on historical events what were your thoughts on "Michael Collins" and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" ? I like Loach's films but I thought that some of the dialogue in "The Wind..." was terrible. It's the mark of a poor writer when you have characters frequently just making speeches to each other or going off on uninterpreted monologues. That spoiled an otherwise decent film for me. I also thought that Cillian Murphy's character was just too "pure", he didn't have any flaws that I can recall. From a history anoraks perspective, a film concerning the life of Arthur Griffith (a very interesting and yet often overlooked individual in Irish history) would be something I'd like to see. The political rise and fall of John Redmond would also be quite interesting to see maybe as a two or three part TV drama. I know that Peter Mullan was trying to make a biopic about James Connolly about fourteen/fifteen years ago but it obviously never got going.

I'm always a bit sceptical about turning history into cheap entertainment. Historians can only guess what Hitler's last day were really like, same as the people who made the film. It is putting together fact, assumption and fiction and coming together with what felt unrealistic and unnecessary. I also never took him seriously as Hitler. ET, I can certainly understand the criticisms of 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley', especially the monologues, but I'm a big Loach fan and new a good few of the extras so went into it with a real positive bias. I also could understand why the film needed to be made. It certainly has its faults but I still enjoyed it. |

Finding the right balance between an in-depth presentation of a historical event, it's main players and in doing it in such a way as to keep the viewer (if we keep this to film and TV rather than books) gripped can be a damn tricky thing to pull off. That's the problem. "Tora Tora Tora" is example of the problem. For those that don't know, it's about the background to the attack on Pearl Harbour and the key American and Japanese personalities involved. I thought it was a good film. Then again, I'm an anorak who loves the historical details and prefer the absence of any schmaltzy "human interest story". Audiences at the time this film was released in 1970 however, thought the film was boring and it flopped. A very hard balancing act indeed, making films about historical events.
On Loach and Ireland, I did enjoy "Jimmy's Hall", that was not a bad film. Based on a true story wasn't it ? The "war of wills" between Jimmy and the local priest was interesting to see played out. How was that one for you PM ? |

'Michael Collins' is littered with historical inaccuracies but it's an entertaining enough film. Julia Roberts' attempt at some description of an Oirish accent is pretty comical but is just one of many hilarious attempts by American actors over the years.

Michael Collins is dreadful, truly dreadful. Liam Neeson seems an alright fella, I briefly met him after the Collins film as he unveiled the statue in Clon, but he isn't much of an actor. I don't think I have enjoyed anything I have watched him in and he is a factor in that!
