Yeah, it was about the valid nature of popular music at the time, particularly Bruce. The first lyric is 'Brucie dreams'. In spite of that, McAloon is a big fan of Springsteen, he just felt the zeitgeist required some more depth.

I think he is spot on in that an awful lot of Americans who loved Bruce and U2 for
That matter totally either bypassed the lyrics or misinterpreted them. This is seen in that many were disgusted when both Springsteen and u2 were critical of Trump and they said I liked them when they were not into politics 😀😀😀😀 which is basically when they were all about 14. Born in the USA being used by the Republicans is a classic example of that. The critique in Springsteen’s lyrics were often missed by some of his fans.

That sort of thing happens a lot in America. A lot of musicians are left-wing, or in Bruce's case liberal, or at least good ones tend to be. The American right want everyone to be Kid Rock or Ted Nugent. I am not sure what this has to do with McAloon though, as he was coming from the other side and what he saw as the cloying sentimentality that had crept into Bruce's lyrics in particular, especially as 'Cars and Girls' was written around the time 'Tunnel of Love' was released. This quote is from the song's wiki, taken from a 1992 interview with Maconie: "The point of the parody is this: not that I think Bruce Springsteen is crap, it's that I think a lot of his audience get into him on a patriotic level that he doesn't intend. They misinterpret him, their enjoyment of him is inaccurate, all very imperialist American. I wanted to write a song about someone who was thick white trash, listening to Springsteen, and saying 'But our lives aren't like that'"
