What tune are you listening to at the minute

Hang in there! Sore fingers will disappear in 2-3 weeks. Depending on your commitment - i.e. how often you practise - you'll be playing the basic stuff within that period. Finger pain is tougher with a steel-string guitar compared to the nylon of a classical (Spanish) instrument. But the more-versatile steel is probably the better choice for the longer term. 

Those first few chords - smudged and clumsy initially - are frustrating and painful but your fingers will soon find them and improvement is fast as the tips harden and your confidence grows. It all boils down to your level of commitment and ultimate goal.

There are thousands of online teachers - the majority either poor musicians, poor teachers or both. I have no hesitation in recommending Justin Sandercoe.  He's massively popular, very affable, understands all the hurdles and keeps it simple. Best of all - he's free. If you look at the site (below) you'll get a good idea of the guy, his methods and his courses. He also has an app for beginners. 

From reading your YBIG posts, you're both big boys not lacking in attitude - and unlikely to let a few sore fingertips knock you over. I guarantee you'll both be knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door within a month.
