Thought the pitch would be in bits with all the rain but it was surprisingly in good nick. The heavy rain stopped before the game and only one or two showers throughout the game!

Roberts seals win for Ireland U16sTuesday, 24 November 2009 22:06
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND U16............2-1 CZECH REPUBLIC U16.....1 Mickey Drennan (pen) 35 Jan Filip 30 Philip Roberts 50 Philip Roberts capped a superb international debut with the winning goal for the republic of Ireland against the Czech Republic at Sandy Lane, the home of Rock Celtic FC in Blackrock, Dundalk. On his first appearance in the green jersey, the Norwich City striker was coolness personified ten minutes into the second half when he broke clear of the defence and beat goalkeeper Lukas Brych with a low drive. Ireland were full value for the victory and the fantastic display by John Morling's side sent the 812 supporters who turned out for game home more than happy. The Irish were up against a talented Czech side and had to work hard in the opening half to contain their technically gifted visitors. Goalkeeper Joe Coll had a busy opening, producing a string of superb stops including one from Jarina which required him to dive full-stretch to turn a wicked volley around the post. Despite their best efforts, Ireland did concede after 30 minutes when captain Jan Filip was first to react in the box from Robert Hruby's corner and managed to nod the ball beyond Coll in the Irish goal. Ireland didn't lose their purpose and good approach play resulted in an equaliser five minutes later. A surge from the half-way line by Kenny McEvoy saw the winger release the onrushing Kealon Dillon who, in turn, set up up Roberts to shoot in the box. But, just as he was poised to try his luck, he was brought down and Mickey Drennan put the ‘keeper the wrong way with the spot-kick. Much to the approval of the home support, Ireland upped the pace in the second half and once Roberts handed them the advantage, the lead could have been extended. Dillon was sent through one-on-one with the goalkeeper in stoppage time but the custodian kept his cool to thwart the midfielder's close-range shot. The nations will meet again in the second part of the double-header in Kingspan Century Park in Monaghan on Thursday night (7.30pm). REP OF IRELAND: Joe Coll (Glenea Utd); Eoin Hyland (Belvedere FC), Stephen Smith (Arsenal), Jamie Smith (Cherry Orchard), Shane Griffin (Carrigaline United); Kealan Dillon (Belvedere), Michael Hyland (Milwall), Sami Ade Osobe (Glenmuir Utd); Michael Hehir-Drennan (Evergreen), Kenny McEvoy (Villa, Waterford), Philip Roberts (Norwich City), CZECH REP: Brych, Soukup (Luftner 46), Filip, Sterba, Cermak, Verner (Shejbal 70), Salasovic (Nerad 70), Hruby, Jarina, Julis (Svoboda 60), Holub. 3-3 against the same opposition last night. the score line suggests a better game than it actually was. the left midfielder, Mickey Brennan i think, scored all 3 goals for ireland, 1 from play, 1 from a free and 1 pen. Czech republic equalised on 3 occasions, last one in final minute. poor defending for the goals conceded.bitter cold too..reasonable crowd.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND U16 3-3 CZECH REPUBLIC U16
Mickey Drennan bagged a hat-trick as the Republic of Ireland Under-16s were pegged back three times for a draw against the Czech Republic in Kingspan Centiry Park tonight (Thursday). After winning the first match of the double-header 2-1 on Tuesday, Ireland looked on course for another victory but the visitors snatched a last-minute leveller. Brandon Miele set the tone for a storming start by Ireland in the first minute when he latched onto Mickey Drennan's cross from the left and hooked a low shot on the turn wide. An invigorated Ireland went ahead following their next move on six minutes. Full-back John Kavanagh raided down the flank and crossed to the far post where Drennan arrived on cue to power a downward header past Jan Kotnour in the Czech goal. Captain Jamie Smith could have extended the advantage shortly after when Kotnour allowed a right-wing cross slip from his grasp. The Irish defender couldn't get a proper connection on the loose ball and the ‘keeper recovered in time to block the effort. Lobos Horacek almost levelled but his angled shot flew just wide of Ian Lawlor's right post and the goalkeeper produced a terrific save on the half hour to tip a free-kick by Petr Nerad over the bar. The visitors kept the pressure on until the break and conjured an equaliser in stoppage time. Patrick Svoboda embarked on a mazy run from the half-way line towards the Irish box and, despite having his initial shot blocked, he followed up to lash home the rebound from ten yards. Svoboda continued to pose a threat in attack and raced clear on goal eight minutes into the second half. Defender Joe O'Brien matched him for pace and got a nick on the striker's shot which Lawlor stooped low to foil. Ireland then took a stranglehold and ten minutes after Kieran Sadlier saw his shot sail wide, the West Ham United striker was wrestled down on the edge of the box on the hour. Referee Neil Doyle awarded a free and Mickey Drennan stepped up to rifle a low shot around the wall and into the bottom corner. Two minutes later, the tie was back level when Svoboda rose unopposed eight yards out to plant a header into the corner. The action continued to intensify and Ireland regained the lead for the third time with seven minutes left from the penalty spot. Jan Filip was adjudged to have handled a cross by Kealan Dillon in the box and Drennan completed his hat-trick with a powerful spot-kick which Kotnour got a hand to. With time just up, however, the Czechs plundered another goal to make it 3-3 as substitute Lukas Julis turned in a cross by Svoboda for the last act of a six-goal thriller. REP OF IRELAND: Ian Lawlor (Home Farm); John Kavanagh (Ringmahon Rangers), Joseph O'Brien (Salthill Devon), , Jamie Smith (Cherry Orchard), Stephen Smith (Arsenal); Brandon Miele (Cherry Orchard), Paul Devereux (St. Josephs Boys), Kealan Dillon (Belvedere), Michael Drennan (Evergreen); Carel Tiofack (Ballincollig AFC); Kieran Sadlier (West Ham United). CZECH REPUBLIC: Jan Kotnour; Jan Filip, Jan Sterba, Ales Cermak, Michal Holub (Pavel Jarina 46), Michael Luftner, Pavel Marianus (Nikolas Salasovic 55), Petr Nerad, Jan Shejbal, Lubos Horacek (Lukas Julis 66), Patrick Svoboda (Mirolslav Verner 80). REFEREE: Neil Doyle. |

Irish U16s held to 2-2 draw in IsraelMonday, 11 January 2010 16:52
John Morling's Republic of Ireland U16 team today (Monday) drew 2-2 with Israel in Ra'anana, in southern Israel. Ireland came from behind with goals from Michael Drennan and Carel TioFack but they conceded the equaliser in the dying moments of the game as the teams look forward to their next meeting in Tel Aviv on Wednesday. In a frantic start to Ireland's first international game of 2010, it was Israel who enjoyed a sustained period of pressure in the Irish half and they took a rather fortuitous lead after 11 minutes when a cross from the left wing from Assaf Madar was swung into the Irish box and Glenea United goalkeeper, Joe Coll (pictured right) pushed it over the line despite the best efforts of defender, Shane Griffin. Ireland drew level in the 22nd minute when Waterford based midfielder, Kenneth McEvoy's cross was handled in the area by an Israeli defender. Evergreen's Michael Drennan stepped up and slotted the penalty past Yarrin Hassan in Israel's goal. As the first half progressed, John Morling's side grew in confidence with a number of slick attacking moves as Kenneth McEvoy continued to harass the Israeli defence while Reading's James Murphy who was making his debut came close on a number of occasions. Ireland's goalkeeper, Joseph Coll was called into action late in the first half when he made a spectacular save from Rian Ismail when he connected with a corner on the back post. Coll was again called into action within three minutes of the restart when Zidan Mohammad took advantage of some slack defending as he ran through on goal but the Glenea goalkeeper was again on-hand to make a last ditch tackle at the feet of the on-rushing striker to avert the danger. Ireland took the lead in the 48th minute through prolific Ballincollig striker, Carel Tiofack who blasted home from close range following a goal mouth scramble in the Israeli box. In a dramatic ending to the game, Israel claimed a last gasp equaliser following five minutes of extra time when substitute, Orel Horev powerfully headed past Joseph Coll in Ireland's goal giving him no chance. The two sides will meet again on Wednesday, January 12th at the Yankela Grundman Stadium, Ramat HaSharon, Tel Aviv, Israel, kick-off 11am (9am Irish time). Finally a smattering of Polish & Lithuanian names in the squad list for the upcoming U16 games. One of the posts above highlights how unlikely it is that any more than 3 or 4 of these lads will play at any kind of level at all. Darragh Lenihan the only player who made a career for himself in England. |

And it has come full circle, with John Morling's son now in the under 16 squad after John coached the class of 2010 and plenty others.
