Goldcar tried to do me for a bogus fuel penalty fee, the email about the fee came 3 days after I got home. Took me a good few days to get it sorted.

They emailed me only today (3 weeks after I returned home) about the motorway toll fees, which were correct.
So they were in no rush.

I’d imagine if they were going to do you for damage, you would have heard by now.
The fact no-one was there to take it back from you has probably saved your bacon.

Went to Spain there a few weeks ago, hired a piece of sh*t Toyota Yaris from Gold Car, f**king thing could barely get up hills, kept getting overtaken by camper vans and sh*t.

Anyway I kind of clipped a wall coming out of a car park, knocked the back off the side mirror, not problem clipping it back on but there was a chunk taken out of it and a few scratches on the door.

On the way to the airport I stopped in for petrol but it was one of those where you have to pay in advance, the lad behind the counter didn't speak English and I didn't know how much I needed so I asked for 10 litres and got 10 Euros worth, ended up with 3/4 of a tank sending it back.

So far nothing has been taken from my account, two weeks after returning it.
There was nobody on duty when I arrived at the drop off point, so I just parked it up and took the keys into the terminal building the woman in the office just took the keys and I didn't have any sort of check out on the car. Do you reckon I'm in the clear?

You are in the clear I would say. You lucky hoor.  Normally they inspect it when you return it and will say it to you then that you damaged it. As far as I'm aware you returned it and they accepted it back in the condition it was in.  They didn't check it so its their carelessness. They didn't check it before accepting the keys back so as far as you're concerned the car could have been damaged when in their care and you would probably get away with it within the letter of the law.

Cancel the credit card if you want to be on the safe side.

Question here; will they attempt to claim through my insurance, if I cancel my debit card?

I have a rental company trying to say I've damaged their car when it absolutely (and obviously) wasn't me. I'm about to cancel my card after receiving the most laughable repair estimate I've ever seen, should I? Really don't want them going through my insurance.

I had their car for 5 days while mine was being repaired. When I dropped it back to the repair centre where i was told to leave it, they left it 6 (six!) days before picking it up from the centre. The photo of the 'damage' that they've provided wasn't even taken in the same place the car was left, so surely I'm outside the limits of indemnity..?

Anyway, absolute fooking cowboys, Ted...

They can't prove sh*t, in that case. Let them try and claim and see what happens. If they do take it off the credit card, dispute it, and the credit card company should refund it.

It's the should bit that gives me cause for worry. I'm thinking just cancelling the card will at least solve that dilemma, but again, worried about them going through the insurance.

They're telling fibs as well. The car was collected last Friday, but the guy on the phone (presumably who collected the car and doesn't want to take the heat for leaving it so long) told me it was collected on the Thursday and then the damage report (with photo) is dated the Wednesday.

Tell them to sling their hook or you'll report them for fraud

I'd be fairly confident given what you've said that any attempt to take funds from your card would be fraudulent. Put it all together in an email or letter advising them if they proceed in debiting your card that you'll escalate the matter with the relevant authorities including An Garda Siochana.

Those Gold Car bastards did me a few years back. Put me right off renting cars and always use Yellowfish transfers now in Portugal.

I was willing to let them swipe my credit card to hold €1,000 to save me paying the daily excess. They told me the form had a misprint and it was £1,000. Went above my credit card allowance so wouldn't go through. Daily excess on my rental was about a fiver per day but they said that rate was only for online bookings. Had to fork out 3 or 4 times that. Screwed me on the fuel too. Crooks!

Thanks CY2K.

@SD, would you recommend saying this to the rental guy over the phone when he calls me later today?

Always use your Revolut cards for this and other bookings, you can freeze your card. You will also get to see all the declined attempts at taking the money as well.

Has come in handy a few times for this type of thing

Just wondering, if you transferred money off your credit card to bring it to the credit card limit, that could work to make sure any further transactions are blocked?

Probably ignore this, I cant trf on my online bank from Visa, so youd have to physically take out the money or max out your card another way.

A heads up.  I rented in Malaga last week with Ze Interrent via Autoeurope.  When I got to the counter it was Goldcar.

Anyway instead of blocking money they charged my card.  After a battle I just got most of it back (less 17 euro).  Now my card is in euros and I paid in euros but apparently this is a common tactic. They hope you won't bother.  indeed some people don't notice the hefty charge and  they apparently get away with that sometimes.

Autoeurope don't deal with Goldcar any longer I was told.  The Autoeurope guy I was speaking with seemed genuine and wanted to get things sorted not just for me but for the future.   Anybody renting with Ze  Interrent next month would be well advised to read up on Goldcar and then decide whether or not to cancel.

Booked the car with budget. I hope to god they don't have a tie up with gold car.
