Any truth to the rumours that the Republic of Ireland will have "oh ah up the RA" embroidered on their shirts versis Austria? Apparently the fine is small so those in the associatoon feel its a small price to pay.

Listen mate, I just quote the facts, I don't make 'em.

Or you could say that like the Free State, I mean, Ireland, I am firmly neutral when it comes to international disputes which threaten all our existence...

I actually think seeing as it's two British teams playing on Armistice Day, they should be allowed to mark it if they wish (just like we did the rising). it would be completely different if they were playing a former British colony however.

England/Scotland/Wales (I'll leave NI out because it's obviously a lot more contentious) wearing the poppy makes 100 times more sense then football clubs forcing their players to wear them

I keep asking this but nobody answers.  How is it the Brits could go decades on end without wearing this stupid poppy on their shirts and yet now they are up in arms about it?

I reckon it coincides with the rise of social media - every moron has a public platform on which to air their views and go mental at someone for being less British for not supporting our boys innit

Where were all these poppys on the prem league shirts 15 or 20 yrs ago?  Why were they not commemorating it back then?

This poppy sh*te is to regain pride and cover up for the war crimes of JOHN BULL.   I'd say the people of IRAQ are grateful to the British alright.

Can you fix a bike?
If you can fix a bike you can fix a plane.  If you can fix a plane you fix a plane on an aircraft carrier.

Can you take a shot of vodka?  Then you can take a few shots to the upper body.

Ever get legless down the pub?  Then you can get legless after being blown to bits in Afghanistan.

Ever commit a crime?  Then you can commit a crime while wearing a British Military uniform and get praised for it.

this bollix only started circa 2005 i think.

when your hands are soaked in blood in iraq and Afghanistan i guess you have to do something to curry favour.

Jingoistic bullsh*t, symbolising the right wing, anti foreigner, pro war, police state. Perpetuated by the right wing media to the uneducated working classes to blame lifes ills on. Not too dissimilar to what the nazis done to be honest.

They thought they were too good to be playing them, went to Brazil and were eaten by a goal scored by a kitchen porter.LOL

On a point of information, it is arguable that but for the four British Associations, there wouldn't even be a FIFA.

For by 1945, FIFA was completely bankrupt, primarily as a result of there having been very little international football for nearly six years, including none in Europe. Furthermore, as a result of wartime enmities, many countries were refusing to play each other, thereby stymying FIFA's role further.

So that in 1947, the four Associations staged a Great Britain v Rest of Europe game at Hampden Park, with all the £31k proceeds from the 135k(!) crowd going to FIFA, to bale them out:

[Note the Rest of Europe No.4; also the commentator's final remark ]

P.S. Did I ever mention how we saved the Olympic Games too?

Yeah imagine no Fifa, who could possibly imagine an international tournament for the worlds most popular sport ....

The FA (and clubs) may just be reflecting a resurgence in interest in World War One (esp) and World War Two, including amongst young people. And whatever you think about Iraq etc, it is those two conflicts which are most associated with the Poppy.

And I suspect that this interest stems from the fact that those two wars are now included in the schools history curriculum:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/0/ww1/

And one other factor which may be relevant is that there are a large number of disabled ex-Servicemen in the UK from recent conflicts, including NI, Afghanistan and Iraq etc. And unlike in previous decades, when the disabled were isolated, forgotten and even hidden away, they are now more fully acknowledged and supported - see the rise of the Paralympic Games, or the Invicta games.

That being so, the Poppy is an obvious way of showing support for disabled veterans:
Where does money raised during the Poppy Appeal go to?
All net Poppy Appeal income raised goes into the Royal British Legion Benevolent Fund, and is made available to beneficiaries according to need, regardless of where they live, and includes beneficiaries who qualify overseas.
All proceeds raised from poppies in Scotland go to Poppyscotland who provide tailored support and funding to thousands of ex-Service men and women as well as other vital services in advice, employment, mobility, respite, housing and mental health support.
Most proceeds raised from poppies overseas go to support beneficiaries in that country. Some countries collect more than they need for local welfare, and any excess funds are returned to head office to support beneficiaries in the UK.

http://support.britishlegion.org.uk/app/answers/detail/a_id/280/~/poppy-faqs

Finally, and to bring the debate back to the thread title (kinda), the passage of time possibly has an effect. That is, people may now look back at past conflicts more "safely" (dispassionately) after a period of time has elapsed. Which would explain why there seems to have been much more interest in the Centenary of the 1916 Rising, than there was in 1966?

I hope this provides an answer (of sorts) to your question. Should it prove inadequate, may I suggest you continue the discussion on some of the other Poppy threads, so that this one can stick to the subject of the FAI's contravention of the FIFA rules on political slogans on shirts?

The British should never have gone into Iraq and tbh I don't have much sympathy for the British victims who perpetrated war crimes.

For three points, who invented the sport?

And for your supplementary question, why is it the world's most popular?
[Clue: Bri--sh Emp--e]

P.S. Apologies if these questions are too easy for a Newry man. After all, I'd expect you to know all about Garrison Sports...

And this relates to the 1916 shirts how?

[Territorial thinks: If only there was some sort of forum on the internet where one could discuss the war in Iraq. Nah, that's a crazy idea...]
