I like the idea of that. I’d put the 1/4 finals midweek too.

Great idea for barstoolers. Terrible idea for fans who go to games.
Grand for home fans, but they don't tend to go much in the cups anyway. Terrible for away fans, who mainly use the cup for a piss up these days.

Incorrect on both counts.

I mostly go to home games that are midweek.
It’s easier to go after work. If you have a family the weekends are not ideal.

Nobodys gonna go and try to make the 10pm train home. They'll get a supporters bus, like they do for every other evening kickoff any football fan ever has. Airtricity League fans have managed it for years

All very good for Southampton fans who live in Southampton. Plenty of fans for all teams who don't necessarily live in the same town or City as the team now.

The romance of the cup is alive and well.  Liverpool refusing to field one 1st team player for the replay and Klopp refusing to manage the team.  This is the one they all want to win.

Again, they'll do whatever they do for every other evening kickoff on the calendar, like last Tuesday night in London

Missing the point here - Adding more midweek fixtures adds more inconvenience.

Sign of the times sadly, football is not for the real supporters anymore, it’s for the TV audience the barstoolers And house managers, you know the real experts of which Ireland is a fine example with its fake scousers and mancs at the top of the pile
Just because it's tradition does not make it right

There's only a certain amount of Saturdays in the season, some game had to go to midweek. It's not any better if it's a FA Cup or League game that goes midweek.

What was the alternative to having a cup replay midweek?

Get rid of replays - Simples.
And ensure that money is spread around accordingly to all clubs to mitigate against the loss of of replays.

I wonder will Klopp get similar criticism as Pellegrini had a few years ago for disrespecting the competition

Not quite the same situation given the winter break.

Shouldn't be a replay. Straight to penalties and skip extra time. Can't blame Liverpool one bit.

The scheduling of the FA Cup in general is a joke with the 3rd round on the weekend after the hectic Christmas period where teams can have 4 games in 10 days or so and the 4th round is after a round of midweek league games. It's no surprise then that managers choose to rest players. I presume the only reason 3rd and 4th round replays stand is for the lower league teams so they can have a 2nd chance to earn a big payday against a big team. It's sad to see the decline of the FA Cup but the football authorities only have themselves to blame for this situation.

It's been scheduled that way ever since... well forever, basically.

They can't schedule the 3rd and 4th Rounds any earlier, since not only do they have to get the 1st and 2nd Rounds for FL clubs out of the way in November and December, but they also have to accommodate the preliminary qualifying rounds, where the minor clubs start as early as August!

Nor can they schedule the 3rd and 4th rounds any later, since the threat of bad weather means postponements would make it a rush to complete the final rounds by May, as well as clattering into the League run-in and Europe etc (also international dates in the Spring).

See, there's the thing. We get people (not you, btw) who are bewailing the decline of the FA Cup etc.

Yet at the same time, they're calling for ever more changes to the traditional format (scrap replays, midweek rounds etc), which would take it even further away from what it was in the "Good Old Days".

Can't have it both ways.

Who you talkin about Terrance? Moi?
I am all for scrapping the FA Cup. Or have it for Championship or lower only teams.  Not worth a sh*te anymore.

Last time it mattered was 1996. 1999 latest.

Absolute cringe all this talk of giantkillings and the romance of the cup when teams dont even want to be in it.

Because getting a bus instead of a train which adds about 5 hours to your journey if you live up north from the Midlands and further up thus missing your next day's work isn't an inconvenience?

Most people do actually rush for the last train for that reason. Not because they're scared of being up til 3am or something.

And for what reason? To appeal to the couch supporters and TV broadcasters.

If you're gonna keep replays on a midweek atleast put them at a reasonable time for people to actually get home
