Grondona paid Ireland players $10K each not to hit Messi when Ireland played Argentina in Lansdowne.

Allegedly

La Nacion..

"Acc. To report, it was Grondona that came up with idea to "appease Irish" after they were knocked out from Wc by France."

Something to do with insurance problems as Barca were playing preseason in Asia at the time.

Wiretaps were they returned to jeopardize the work of the late president of the AFA , where among other things revealed possible arrangements of parties and arbitrators designations finger first. Yet another episode that keeps the rest in peace leader was revealed in Argentina .

Ireland, you know, he menaced with a millionaire trial. He had been without going to the 2010 World Cup because France won the decisive match with an illegal goal, scored by Gallas, but the hand of Thierry Henry in the previous action. Weeks ago, amid the uncovering of corruption in FIFA, we learned that Joseph Blatter Ireland calmed paying 5 million euros, a deal that outraged much of the British press.

What is not known is that the agreement, as usually happens in all negotiations, included a secret part. It was Julio Grondona who suggested a solution that would calm Blatter once and for all Irish fury: "We took him to Messi". The friendly, which also served for the debut of Sergio Batista as coach of the team after the dismissal of Diego Maradona, was scheduled for August 11, 2010 in Dublin, ideal for the inauguration of the new Aviva Stadium. Barcelona, which was preseason in China, put the outcry. There was no where to get the $ 5 million that were needed to pay for insurance. The match will be played, Argentina won 1-0 with goals from Angel Di Maria and Messi showed only glimpses of his class, two major ratings missed by his colleagues.

"And how about the insurance solucionaste Messi?" He asked an officer. "Ten thousand dollars to every Irish player to not get hit," said the AFA president who ruled for 35 years. Before his story, he looked up the source (Grondona was already deceased), and said: "Forgive July so I will tell."

Does this alleged secret negotiations that saved a millionaire FIFA trial in Grondona appears listeners ? They hear that , in fact, do no more than confirm what had leaders from different clubs since the 80s on Grondona , but always off the record . Some did it out of fear. Others because they were perhaps part of the trap . Anyway , it was a routine : Grondona used to dedicate a moment of threats and insults every time I called looking for some official confirmation. Until he calmed down and allowed him to ask about a new topic

Always it produces some embarrassment hear conversations that are supposed to be private . "Society of transparency ," the name of a fabulous book of Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han , "like a hell of sameness ." But even a football coach and not a banker who handled rates, also impressed to hear how powerful trading in privacy. It is the obscenity of power. The reference to the Paraguayan referee Carlos Amarilla, it is true , speaks of Boca that Grondona . But even when asked honest officials, Grondona recalls that knows fox and you also have to watch out for the linesmen , because he has already corrupted to some . More delicate is the interest Estudiantes de San Luis , the team of the rare money . The money used to build the empire.

Grondona (a close friend of Blatter) suggested this friendly, with Messi as the star, as part of the deal after the Henry incident.

Barca weren't happy with this as they would be in Asia at the time and he might get injured.

AFA couldn't find the $5m for insurance so instead paid each Irish player $10,000 not to injure him.

Grondona is dead now.

If any Irish players as individuals took a cent as reported, they should be banned for life. If it was more widespread, ie,  FAI involvement then we should be banned.

Appears that (from balls.ie - linking to an RTE sport story) the match was agreed long before the Henry handball.

This can only indicate that FIFA etc. knew about the handball long before the match occurred.

Where's Javier when you need him?
You asked if I'd be anyone from history, fact or fiction, dead or alive:
I said "I'd be Tony Cascarino, circa 1995"

No way Grondona went straight to players, he would've went to Delaney, Delaney had a word with players to take it handy and the pot redistributed at a later stage.

The game against Argentina was the opener for the Aviva and as far as I remember was planned a good bit ahead. Take this with a huge pinch of salt.

Also, what's $10,000 to a professional footballer?

The friendly was announced long before the playoff as mentioned above. Reading between the lines Argentina probably had an agreement with the FAI that all their stars were present and/or Messi in the opening match

Sadly, it wouldnt surprise most of us if this did happen. Its not the kind of allegation that comes out of nowhere especially about a minor friendly years ago
