Seems like a backward move but Mick only has the job for two years after all and he's willing to do whatever it is for qualifying. Developing players won't be to the forefront of his agenda.

What you have here is a case of people not reading the story. Mick has asked DM to make himself available in case of an emergency striker shortage a la Glenn Whelan has done for midfield position.

Hans my man I have to agree with you here, the writing is on the wall for us again, it looks like it’s going to be more of the same just that there will be a little bit of initial fizz
And overreaction of the week goes to... LOL

No over reaction. Murphy should be left where he is. There is no situation where he should be back in an Irish squad. The simple fact that he is part of a conversation around the Irish squad still is grim.
"I called him an embarrassment to FIFA and to himself," .... He said 'No-one speaks to me like that'.... and I said, "well I do' and that was that."

It looks like we have a few more options now than in 2018 but he still could have offered something in the Nations League, we were very short in last few months under O'Neill.

In fairness he looked sharp last week for forest.Quoting players stats as a 9 can be very misleading sometimes.

Had a great game against Leeds a couple of weeks back, gave Jansson a horrid time.

Cant read too much into stats, especially for a bit part player that played as a 9.

His 33 games equate to just 1310mins in total, 1310/90 = 14.5 games over a 10 year period.

So a goal every 4 games is another way to look at it statistically.

...but stats are bollox, should be judged on individual performances. He was great in the big games like Germany, the Bosnia playoff, Italy and France at the Euros, Serbia, Wales.

Id have no bother having on standby if Mick felt he needed him. Worked out alright with Cas and Quinn the last time around.

In fairness, Quinn was not 30 yet when McCarthy took over and Cascarino was 33.

That said Cas went on to be one of the top scorers in UEFA when qualifying for France 98 and Quinn was still in the thick of it by 2002

Was more so referring to them staying on until 36/37 and still being able to do a job effectively off the bench for the final few minutes as a plan B / target man ...and as far as I know both were talked into staying on for their final campaigns too.

The irony of this board criticising O'Neill for his setup but encouraging a 36 year old target man to come into the squad, sweet god almighty LOL

I'm okay with Mick opening up all options available but assuming everyone is available he needs to be down there in last place.

I think we now have a situation where Murphy should be back in the Irish squad, and that is for the last 15 minutes V Slovakia. And the last 15 minutes V Bosnia/NI if it works.

We're not going to do anything different V Slovakia to any other game in the campaign, it will be 'keep it tight, try not to concede for 80 mins' and then hit a few long balls toward the opposition third for the last 10. Duffy performed this role V the Danes (unsurprisingly had little effect) so why not go with a fella as big as Duffy, but is also a forward ??

Any thoughts of progressive football of any description have long gone, tis just about getting over the line any way we can at this stage, and if that's the tactic, Murph can do that particular job better than anyone we have in the squad. He has 3 goals in 6 appearances for Bolton this season too, so even at his advanced age, clearly still has a clue where the net is.

In a grimly pragmatic way, it is a logical call.

Picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.....
