Starts his first game in two months and is dropped after that one game because of one bad result. Ross Barkley likely to be back by the next game and yet the manager couldn't even give him a run of consecutive games to try and prove himself. Kind of shows how little of a chance he's been given pretty much since the moment they've been promoted.

Hes has plenty of chances to be fair and really hes done nothing. They see an unproven 19 year old as a better option than a player who should be in his prime right now. Needs to drop down to the championship to be honest. Hes not a premier league quality player. Weve all watched him play 100 times and other than set pieces (which Brady is taking for ireland) its hard to see what else he brings. |

His longest run of games was 4 post-Lockdown when Villa remained unbeaten, picking up 8 points out of a possible 12 to ensure survival. Hourihane was commonly acknowledged to be integral to this late surge of form from Villa. Previous to this, his longest run of games was 3, a sequence that happened 3 times. After starting the opening-day loss to Tottenham, Hourihane was promptly dropped and didn't appear until an impressive late cameo off the bench against Arsenal. Hourihane started the next 3 games and Villa accrued 7 points from a possible 9. Hourihane was dropped for the next game, which Villa were spanked in. His next run of 3 games started with his MOTM performance in a win over Newcastle, followed by a draw against Man Utd and a narrow loss against Chelsea. 4 points from a possible 9. In his final run of 3 games, Villa picked up a picked up 1 point from a possible 9, which was systematic of their overall form before and after that result before they pulled off the great escape beginning with that win against Crystal Palace. So Villa picked up 20 points from a possible 39 when Hourihane was given any sort of run in the team for a PPG of 1.53. They picked up 15 points from a possible 75 in the remaining 25 games, of which Hourihane started infrequently (5 starts). That's a PPG of 0.6 I think there's enough data to suggest that Hourihane is undervalued, and underrated, if anything. Villa won their opening 2 games with Hourihane in the team before dropping him straight after a win over Fulham so it looks like this season will follow a similarly frustrating trajectory for him.

I think your conflating villas performances with hourihanes performances hotlips. Grealish and Watkins have been villas saviours in many games this season.
The fact that hourihane can't get a game, even if he starts he seldom finishes the game. I've seen a lot of games with him for villa and ireland (as he was a mainstay in the Kenny games for far) and hes been poor. I wish he looked good when he's played but he just hasn't. The premier league is too fast for him and he disappears in games for long periods. Set piece specialist but not worth having on the field for.much else.

4 goals and half-a-dozen assists in 21 PL games would suggest the criticism of him is a little bit over the top. He was one of Villa's best players in the run-in last season and started this season in good form. He gets dropped every time they have a bad result because McGinn and Grealish are undroppable. If McGinn was Irish, I'm sure his performances would be called "sh*te" as well. Tis the nature of the beast.

It's really not a nationality thing, McGinn is just a much better all round player than Hourihane is unfortunately. In Hourihane's case the stats probably do lie for two reasons.
Firstly, he's a set piece specialist so his goals and assists tally doesn't really reflect his overall performances. Secondly, he clearly wasn't playing well enough to be picked against the stronger teams in the league last season - he was ineffective in general play and they couldn't afford to carry him for his set pieces, so he only tended to be picked against the weaker teams. This resulted in the PPG stats making him look good as they were skewed due to the lesser quality of opposition when he played. Look, Conor did really well to work his way through the leagues and get a season in the Premier League, but longer term he's just not a Premier League standard player. Which is why an unknown 19 year old gets a run overr him now. Hopefully he can get back to his level, which is probably Championship football or maybe even play further abroad for a few years if he feels he doesn't want to go back to the Championship. o

All would be good moves.
Villa have been amongst the biggest spending clubs in Europe over the past couple of seasons so it was always going to be difficult for him to to hold down a regular first-team place.
He's done incredibly well to get where he has, having worked his way up through all four divisions. |

Just the invisible man. Watching him and Hendrick in midfield for us is like watching Randall and Hopkirk (deceased) with two hopkirks

He was with Sunderland as a youth when they were in the Premiership so effectively he went down the four leagues and back up again. Not many have done that. He will certainly be an asset for whichever of the Championship teams mentioned he decides to go to.

He's not not the worst for us; he at least presents a danger from a set piece. I know he wears green for us, but Hendrick may as well be in full camouflage. You just don't notice him most of the time. He'd make a terrific sniper for the SAS.

I think Hendrick's being grand really; probably our best midfielder pound for pound over the Kenny regime so far. Hourihane flits in and out of games IMO. He'll go an hour without asserting himself with a tendency to give away the ball in bad areas, but then he'll grow into a game and have a twenty or thirty minute spell where he's spraying it around and playing dangerous balls into good areas when we're taking more control of a game. I'd take him out of the firing line personally but he'd be one of the first to come on depending how a game is shaping up.

Hourihane has been terrible, his biggest strength are his set pieces and Brady has been taking them by and large under Kenny.
Hes very slow and just doesn't get involved. Hendrick under Kenny runs himself into the ground and I would agree that some of that is misplaced energy but Hourihane simply offers nothing. Championship level player at a push.

Conor Hourihane has agreed to join Swansea on loan for the rest of the season.
A loan fee and other terms were agreed between the two clubs this morning. Hourihane had a number of Sky Bet Championship clubs to choose from. |

Might put Ryan Manning down the pecking order but otherwise looks like a good deal for all parties.
