Every 'expert' writing Guitar Pete off for the TriumphClap Tiger Roll supposedly a certainty to reverse the form..

Just like at Leopardstown the last day when Gary O Brien and Kevin O Ryan didnt even give him a mention in the build up to the race. The Irish horses may well not be good enough but grade 1 winning form in the book and he has definitely improved since being beaten by Royal Irish Hussar here in the trial in November. He'll warm their arses in the opener.

Had First Lieutenant backed so money back on that.

Briar Hill is the talking horse of this year. Hasnt done anything to justify that price over hurdles. Pont Alexandre was the talking horse of last year and we know what happened that,

Arctic Fire should've gone for the conidtionals or Coral cup. Surely needs a trip. would be backing it if over a longer trip.

Foxhunters and the rest are minefields

The Foxhunters (4pm) is one of my favorite races in the festival. There's a few horses that have been beating each other consistently over the past few years - Oscar Delta, Tammys Hill, On the Fringe, and Salsify.

Salsify won the past few years but is injured this year, last year Oscar Delta should have won but threw off the jockey, leading past the last fence. OD has done nothing since. Tammys Hill and Salsify had a great rivalry last winter. On the Fringe doesn't race as often but has a better record (and will start as favorite) but lost to Tammys Hill last time out.

So to sum up, yes, it's a minefield, any of them could win this. I reckon you race this race 5 times and you'd have 4 different winners. Should be a good race. My moneys going on Tammy's Hill

Market movers 2.05

  • Cheltenian (FR) (7/1)

Verdict

Irish trainers have been responsible for six of the last seven winners of this ultra-competitive handicap and more than a quarter of this year's 28-strong field have travelled across the Irish Sea. Willie Mullins, who has produced Thousand Stars and Final Approach to win in the last four years, saddles three with the market and jockey bookings suggesting the lightly-raced ARCTIC FIRE is his best hope and he gets a tentative vote. His last two runs have been in Grade 1 company and he wasn't disgraced. Gordon Elliott's Flaxen Flare always seems to run well in these big handicaps and was an impressive winner of the Fred Winter 12 months ago while Edward Harty's Minella Foru and Thomas Foley's Never Enough Time arrive in form and will be prominent in the betting. Lac Fontana could prove the best of the home team as five-year-olds generally do well in this and, after a couple of near-misses last season, he's won twice over this course and distance this campaign. Lyvius could also figure if sharpened up by a pair of blinkers while Philip Hobbs has been bullish about the chances of betfair hurdle fourth Cheltenian, who is a former Champion Bumper winner and ran in last year's Supreme Novices'. Alaivan was sixth in the betfair while Strongpoint and Jumps Road both arrive off the back of recent wins, though the latter was undoubtedly lucky at Newbury and has a penalty to carry.

Racing Post 1.30

An open-looking renewal, especially in the absence of key trial winners Le Rocher and Activial. Paul Nicholls knows what's needed for this and there has long been an infectious wave of optimism behind Calipto, while Guitar Pete is a battle-hardened winner of the significant Leopardstown pointer that's provided the last three Irish-trained winners. However, drying conditions only further heighten interest in BROUGHTON, a classy customer off the Flat who looked destined for bigger things when doing everything right in his prep race at Musselburgh. John Quinn has a handy pair with Pearl Castle and Rutherglen potential players, as is Plinth.[Alistair Whitehouse-Jones]

EW 1/4 - 1,2,3,4,5
2.05Distance : 2m 1f Going : Good

Irish trainers have won the last four runnings, and six of the last seven, and Willie Mullins is taken to add his victories in 2010 and 2011 with ARCTIC FIRE, who is Ruby Walsh's choice. He wasn't at his best on soft ground over Christmas but he's got the potential to be very well handicapped based on his close third in the Grade 1 Royal Bond on good to yielding earlier that month. Fellow Irish raiders Minella Foru and Never Enough Time are likely dangers if handling the ground, but the main threat could come from Master Of The Game, who was much improved in a first-time hood (retained) when romping home at Doncaster last time, and a 12lb rise seems far from harsh. This sort of race might bring out the best in Runswick Royal, who could stay on into a place at a big price. [Ben Hutton]

EW 1/4 - 1,2,3
2.40Distance : 3m Going : Good

The conditions of this race will bring out the best in BRIAR HILL, who is unbeaten in three starts over hurdles, and he can add to last year's impressive Champion Bumper success at this meeting. Kings Palace created a big impression when winning his last two starts here and, on ground that suits, he looks a bigger threat than Captain Cutter or Deputy Dan who are clearly very much at home in testing conditions.[Adrian Cook]

3.20Distance : 3m 2f 110y Going : Good

Silviniaco Conti has every chance on his soft-ground form but the lion-hearted BOBS WORTH has shown he can do it on any going and, although he has hardly put up a flashy performance in his life over fences, he keeps doing what is necessary to win. On the down side, he could yet show that last year's desperate win here did leave its mark but his Leopardstown win went some way to reassuring his admirers. Silviniaco Conti was still going well when coming down three out here last year and although it was too far out to draw any conclusions, he is progressive and there was much to like about his King George win at Kempton. He is a big danger, along with the selection's stablemate Triolo d'Alene, who looked good when winning the Hennessy and is said to be thriving, but Last Instalment, so impressive at Leopardstown, has a big question mark about him on this surface. The Giant Bolster, second and fourth in this race in the last two years, has sprinkled his good days rather thinly this winter but he sparkled in headgear here last time and has a decent run in him if the aids work again.
