Charlie McCann, 19 year old, just signed by Rangers from Man Utd u-23s for £750,000.

A creative, central midfielder, played well in every game for Ireland U-17s who went unbeaten in the 2019 European Championships, going out after 3 draws in the group stage. 

Part of a talented year-group for Ireland, with Gavin Bazunu, Andrew Omobamadele, Joe Hodge, Anselmo Garcia McNulty, Matt Everitt, Festy Ebosole and James Furlong.  Particularly creditable draw against a big, physical and skillful Belgian side who featured Doku, the lad who had such a good game against the Italians in the Euros just gone. 

Looks like he has all the potential to be a very good player.  £750,000 for a 19 year old shows Rangers have faith in him, and they say they expect him to be challenging for a first team place in a years time - he'll start on Rangers B team.  Recently broke into the Man Utd U-23/B team.

Born in Coventry, similar to Joe Hodge, he represented England at U 16, before switching to us for U17, U18 and the recent U19 training camp.  

One to keep an eye on in a position where we badly need players coming through.  

Hopefully one of a long-line of Man Utd academy graduates who end up playing for our seniors.

Interesting to see what kind of midfielder he develops into. He played higher up with Hodge and Keogh behind him for the U17s, but United had him playing as a 6 mostly.

I feel Rangers could be a good move for a young player.  They've proven fairly good at bringing younger players through - including lads they've bought in.  Stevie G also clearly an inspirational manager. The club is also clearly in a good place and looking to the future with confidence.   

Ultimately the league is league 1 standard, so they can afford to give guys chances.  But they're also playing in Europe, so that's more PL standard, so, all in all, a good place for a quality young player to develop. 

Ultimately, like Celtic, they are a selling club, so as time goes by, space will turn up in the first team squad.

Some sort of box to box number 8 role is probably his best bet. He’s got good technique and capable of some very nice passes and dribbles but nowhere near to a standard to warrant playing as a number 10. Thus he was pushed deeper but he’s just clueless defensively. Chases the play and gets dragged all over the pitch leaving the entire midfield wide open. A huge reason why United u23s shipped goals left and right. They had a makeshift backline with players out of position and the midfield did absolutely nothing to protect them. McCann the most culpable. So you’ve got to basically find him a role with little defensive responsibility while also not expecting outstanding attacking output. If that can be managed, then he does have some very good ability on the ball.

A little like molumby too... but surely positional awareness can be learned with good coaching?

Well he's officially signed for the Huns anyway, so we'll see how he goes playing opposite Lawal, Vata and probably Luca Connell in the Lowland League this season.

Sounds like a version of a player we too frequently churn out. We're so desperate for quality to come through that if anyone scores a.goal, gets a premier League appearance, or strings together a.couple of decent performances in a row, they're elevated far above what most of.our midfielders are... journeymen.

Our best player is far and away Seamus Coleman who will be 33 soon. There's not really a player stepping up to fill his boots or even provide competition. 

As a result, irish fans don't really have much else to cheer about other than the potential of a young player coming through.

Can we not wait until someone has played a senior game before giving them a thread?

Have we learned nothing from having to move 5 or 6 threads to the RoW section in the recent past?

trying to look at this move logically and not be bitter but at the end of the day its hard to understand any irish player playing for a club that has such an anti-irish history and anti-irish support base

We’ve had Irish players play for clubs like Chelsea and millwall who have a sizeable amount of anti Irish supporters.

I saw villa play away in Goodison a few years and couldn’t believe the amount of anti Irish stuff among their support.

And we also have a load of Irish supporters who support these clubs.

The lads English and probably doesn’t give one iota about Celtic/ rangers. Probably sees it as a chance to play in front of 50k, play in Europe, and hopefully gets a good move back to England. It’s refreshing that he’ll hopefully play for Ireland and not give a sh*te about the sectarian swamp in Glasgow, and only there to progress his career.

My own opinion is that if he’s that good, he shouldn’t be going anywhere near Scottish football and try his luck in championship instead.

Maybe he should have a chat with Mick McCarthy, who back in the day was walking the streets of Glasgow shortly after signing for Celtic and was astounded at some knucklehead he didn't know from Adam coming up to him and shouting that he was a "fenian bastard." Mick had to ask him what a fenian was.

If this is story is true, and he isn't showing his own inimitable brand of humour, then I'd have to question Mick's Irishness is if he doesn't know what a fenian is.
