News breaking tonight that English teams won't be able to sign non-UK players until they're 18. That includes Irish lads obviously. Big change

I think it might be a good move for us. Get our kids off to foreign leagues like Belgium and Holland etc.. England has become the graveyard of ambition for Irish players.

Combine this with Kieran Lucid's AI league, could be a huge boost for Irish football domestically.
Will European sides be looking to Ireland for technically superior players? I doubt it. |

Let’s hope they don’t go anywhere and stay in Ireland until they are 18 and then if they are good enough they go up a level and the LOI club gets a few bob

I would think Ireland get a pass here because of the common travel area arrangements. 17 year old seamus could travel to the UK to be a builder. Why wouldn’t he be able to come over and be a footballer. |

The Football Association has confirmed that Premier League and EFLclubs will not be able to sign foreign players until they are 18 under new regulations that will be introduced upon completion of the Brexittransition period, with all new signings from European Union nations requiring a work permit that will be allocated on a points-based system" |

UK clubs are working on the assumption that Irish players will indeed be exempt

It isn't an FA ruling, it is a FIFA rule. The transfer of minors under 18 is illegal in every country under FIFA rules, with the exception of EU citizens being allowed to move at 16 because FIFA have no actual jurisdiction to stop EU citizens moving to work as is their right. This exception will still apply to Irish citizens who have a legal right to work freely in the UK, something which can't be imposed upon by FIFA.

Are clubs still able to bend the rules ...
Say young Manuel from Spain is very good at football. His Dad just happens to gets hired by Man City to be a club scout. The family then moved to Manchester for non football reasons - his dad has found a good job in Manchester. Manuel then signs for Man City youth team

They can sure try. Sometimes it works or as has been seen with several clubs who’ve tried to play fast and loose with that excuse they get themselves a transfer ban, a fine, and the player is banned from competitive football.

So this is something which may benefit young Irish players? We would.be moving back towards the 80/90s where English clubs focus on the UK and Ireland for youth prospects rather than across Europe. It should see a larger amount of Irish players at big clubs?

People are suggesting this is why Preston bought Cork City.
