I'd add one thing. If you find a hotel that you're happy with on booking.com, always check the price on the hotel's own website before booking as booking.com isn't always cheaper.

I'm sure most regular booking.com users would be aware of this but if you're ever making bookings, do it through the app rather than desktop as a lot of the time there's a mobile only discount in addition to your genius one.
Was looking at Key West in the summer and it's very expensive for accommodation but checked the app and there's cheaper options that are not on the desktop site with the mobile only discount. Booking.com amd skyscanner

Contact the hotel and make up a sob story as to why you can't go. They might say feck off or they might sort you out

Happened to me twice in for the Denmark trip because I'm a complete plonker, got stung for €180. I had no money in my account but the payment still went through and my debit card account is now on negative funds so it looks like they can still charge your card.

I booked a hotel two days ago on booking.com. In an act of sheer stupidity, I didn't realise I booked without free cancellation. Got an email today to say there was a problem with my card. I made the reservation on a debit card and I rarely have money in the bank account this is linked to. The hotel tried to take the money today. If I cancel my booking, it says I have to pay €98. Is this hotel able to charge my card even if there's no money in it?
I found another hotel today with free cancellation and just went and booked this as I'm pissed off with the hotel on my original booking. Can I get out of this without paying anything? I'm hoping they just try to take money again and if there's nothing in my account, they'll just cancel it on their side.
