For me the culture around the 1990 world cup was unbelievable.  Nessun Dorma he best world Cup song ever.  The stadiums in Italy at the time were class (not now).    The football was utter dung but we didn't care as Ireland were there for the 1st time.  Italy was a great venue.

Since 1998 the world cup has been on a serious downward spiral imo. International football has fallen down the pecking order.  Too much football on telly for a world cup to be a novelty anymore.  Stadiums and venues all looking alike nowadays.  FIFA have official grass cutting patterns and netting so every stadium looks the same and it will look the same as 2010 or 2014 etc..  World Cup songs are pure sh*te. Will Smith is doing some utter dung of a rap for Russia.  Russia obviously have no musicians.

The final nail in the coffin will be the jumbo world cup with a gazillion teams in it.

For me 1994 will always be the epitome. Ireland fans often forget that our group was a lot more conservative than the rest of the tournament. Some real crackers, apart from our game with Norway and the final that nobody wanted to win.

1998 was amazing for me as a neutral. Again, a lot of very competitive games, with some of a golden generation of play on show.

2010 will always be the worst. Awful tournament.

94 for me

First WC I can properly remember. Only have vague recollections of Italia 90
Eamonn Dunphy:"I'll tell you who wrote it, Rod Liddle, he's the guy who ran away and left his wife for a young one".

Bill O'Herlihy: Ah ye can't be saying that now Eamonn

I think 98-06 were very good tournaments, 98 and 02 in particular. Since then though, they've been sh*te alright, although in fairness 2014 had some good games in the group stages, and the Brazil-Germany semi final is one of the most incredible games I've ever seen

1982 all the way.

The best team never to win the world cup who played amazing football.

Lots of great games including the Brazil v France quarter final that's most peoples idea of the best ever world cup match.

The classic Italian way of starting incredibly slowly and then finishing so strongly in the final with the Tardelli incredibly memorable roaring goal celebration.

It doesn't get better than that

France v Brazil was in the 86 World Cup. France beaten by Germany in semi in 82 and Rossi beat Brazil.
I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

2006 was a decent tournament and far better than 1990 anyway.  Best thing about 1990 other than Ireland's success was how it instigated so much change to the rules etc.

The first one I remember was 1990.

1994 was the best by miles for me. This is a really good summary of it.

98 / 02 and 06 were also great world cups.

The last two have been poor. Alot more bad games than good.

I really must watch some of the games from the earlier world cups.

Is there any good links for these World Cup matches?

94 for me, can only remember the Romania game & the homecoming from 1990.

I actually enjoyed the last one in 2014 too.

That was the one that really kick-started my interest in football. Heart

Having said that, the best quality tournament for me was France '98 with the last tournament coming a fairly close 2nd.  If this year's tournament is anywhere near as good, I'll be happy enough. Clap

SA 2010 was toxic - too many mediocre teams and too many defensive-minded managers. Dead
