They were supposed to play in the Southern League but FIFA said that the League of Ireland could only go ahead if they kicked all non Free State teams out. That rule is the same today. Derry are only in because of some agreement.

Hi folks, just to let you all know about an exciting new campaign st ...arted last week in memory of one of your former famous players, PATRICK O'CONNELL. As you may know O'Connell played for Belfast Celtic in the early years of last century (I believe up to 1909) before going on to have a varied and distinguished career with several clubs in England, most notably Manchester United (Captain 1915- ) and representing the Republic of Ireland. He then moved to Spain in the 1920's and achieved notable success as a manager with such clubs as Racing Santander (taking them from the regional leagues to be founding members of "La Liga") Real Betis (remarkably winning their one and only league title in 1935) and most famously, FC Barcelona, guiding them through the troubled times of the Spanish Civil War. Despite this success, O'Connell's personal life was far from straightforward, and sadly he died destitute in London and is buried in an unmarked grave in the city to this day. the PATRICK O'CONNELL MEMORIAL CAMPAIGN is an effort launched by a group of fans, with the backing of his relatives (Mike and Sue O'Connell) to raise funds to restore his grave, and to commission a statue of the man as a worthy tribute to his contribution to British, Irish and Spanish football..... There are some exciting events planned, and we aim to involve all of his former clubs, bringing fans together from many different backgrounds...Please take a look at www.facebook.com/POConnellmemorial ....We hope you'd all like to give this campaign your support...THANKS ! McGeady donates Irish shirt to centre
Aiden McGeady’s father John (right) and his uncle Pat donate Aiden’s Ireland jersey to the museum
By Staff Reporter
W ord is spreading about the Belfast Celtic Museum at the Park Centre and some special visitors made the trip all the way from Bonnie Scotland to visit on Friday, February 8.
Relations of former Celtic star Aiden McGeady stopped off at the museum, spending time checking out the 250 exhibits and soaking up the history of Belfast’s Grand Old Team.
In town on a family trip, the McGeadys made the museum their first port of call and brought with them some gifts, including an Ireland international jersey signed by Aiden himself!
Aiden’s ‘geansai’ was handed over by his dad John and uncle Pat, who also brought another gift, a handwritten letter by Belfast Celt Jimmy McAlinden, detailing his career, along with his portrait, taken while at Belfast Celtic.
Both of these will soon be on display at the museum in the Park Centre, the former home of Belfast Celtic Park.
Speaking after the visit, Belfast Celtic Society Chairman Pádraig Coyle said: “It was a real treat to welcome the McGeady family to our museum and even more thrilling when they presented us with Aiden’s jersey.
“It was a total surprise and the message inscribed on it is personal to the museum, giving us best wishes – we can’t wait to get it on display.
“The McGeadys are, of course, regular visitors to Ireland and have strong Donegal links, hence Aiden’s choice to play his international football in Dublin.
“Our guide was very surprised at the amount of information the whole family already knew about Belfast Celtic and it was great to be able to detail the many links between the two Celtics.
“Aiden is now at Spartak Moscow, but we feel his jersey is another little connection between the two clubs as, like us all, he remains a Celtic fan!
“John McGeady, Aidan’s dad, is an accomplished footballer himself, who played for Sheffield United, where his teammate was Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone, and he started his career at Third Lanark in Glasgow, another club to slip into history as they left football in 1967.
“But their story doesn’t stop there as Aiden’s uncle Pat has helped revive the Third Lanark name as a junior team in Scotland, so the family really are steeped in football.
“On behalf of all the members of the Belfast Celtic Society, I’d like to thank the McGeadys for visiting the Belfast Celtic Museum and for the wonderful gift from Aiden himself!”

Not very well known, but IRA leader Oscar Traynor played in goal for Belfast Celtic.
Led a full life; a goalkeeper, saw action during Easter week, and both The Tan War and Civil War (on the Republican side), a Sinn Féin TD, Minster for Defence during The Emergency, Minister for Justice, and President of the FAI
Most people know there is a road and football Cup named after him but I wonder does this great man have a statue either in Dublin or Belfast?

For those interested shirts donated by Figo,Kahn,Maldini,Beckham and others are on display at the museum at the Park Centre it opens Thurs evening and Saturday mornings from 11am.
Danny Devenney award winning belfast artist will be painting a spectacular mural this summer telling the O'Connell story from Belfast Celtic via Hillsborough,Boothferry Park,Old Trafford Seville to Barcelona.
Ignition Mgmt Noel Gallagher's Company have given us permission to use live lyrics from the song Cast No Shadow by Oasis - 'When you take my Soul Don't take my Pride...'
Given Patrick's success came in Barcelona and Seville the words will be translated into Catalan and Spanish and appear on the mural.
As well as raising awareness of this story we hope this piece will be of inspration to young people who harbour football/sporting ambitions.
The mural will be unveiled on Aug 7th as part of Feile Belfast.

Why did Cork Celtic fold? |
I'm pretty sure it was financial issues. Celtic and Alberts went at the end of 78/79 season and a new Cork United (nothing to do with the 1940's version) replaced them. Crowds were awful at the end. I attended the Limerick game in January 1979 at the Lodge and there were approx 60 people at it. It would be another decade before the crowds came back to Cork football (Cobh Ramblers cup run excepted).

Stunning archive film discoveries of Belfast Celtic Park
Two stunning pieces of film from the 1920’s, showing events at Belfast Celtic Park on the Donegall Road, have been discovered by the Belfast Celtic Society. Recent searches on the British Pathe website have unearthed footage of a pony trotting race at Celtic Park during the Truce in the Tan War in July 1921.
At this time, Belfast Celtic had withdrawn from football due to political violence and pony trotting would have been a welcome sporting release for people in west Belfast at a time of high tension. A second, five minute long piece of archive, from the ITN Source website, shows the amazing sight of the 1925 Celtic Carnival winding its way from the city centre through west Belfast to Celtic Park.
Organised to provide funds for Belfast Celtic’s return to football after the conflict of the early 20’s, the carnival drew tens of thousands of participants and spectators to Celtic Park, where revelers enjoyed a funfair. The money raised from this event was used to build the Willof.airy Stand, which loomed over the Iveagh district until the ground’s demolition in the early 1980’s. You can read the rest of this original article and see the films referred to here. |
