After signing a massive sponsorship deal with Spotify, Barcelona has also been busy selling its TV rights to generate cash. The most recent windfall comes from the sale of the club's production...

as far I know there are very few clubs with a similar asset so would be interesting to know what exactly it is that Barca studios produce and how it is valued at 400m $. Anyone have an idea?

Selling their future to pay for their present. Great financial management.

Every Barca manager is always under huge pressure, i.e. "Win trophies or be sacked."

But this ups the pressure on Xavi to a new level: "Win trophies or the club goes bust".

Bit like Leeds under Ridsdale/O'Leary, where they spent money they didnt have on the basis that qualifying for the CL would repay it - until they didn't.

The Barca equivalent must be win the CL to repay it.

This looks like a recipe for disaster. Liquidating the assets can only be done once, and if for some reason it doesn’t work out on the pitch it will mean that they will be back in the same position they were last year. To your point Terri, this appears to align with a strategy that has not only failed clubs in the past, but reduced them to a point where their existence is under threat.

I still maintain that the ESP was heavily motivated by the massive liquidity injection it would have brought, and is why the Spanish clubs are the last to give up on it.

I'd nearly guarantee there is a link to licensing with this purchase. The asset is the licensing contract for producing and selling Barcelona 'fan tokens'

Absolutely.

It may be that Barca (and Real) are banking either on their Court case succeeding and allowing them to go ahead with the ESL; or, even if it doesn't go ahead, they can sue for compensation the other ESL clubs (for breaching the binding contracts they signed).

And as a final "safety net" should the above strategy fail, Barca are probably gamblng that La Liga, Spanish football generally, and the Catalan government will all consider them "too big to fail" and bail them out somehow.

(Though how they would get round EU State Aid/Competition laws over any bail out would be a row for another day)

I'm not sure if their situation has changed recently but in their golden years (2006-2015), the players bonuses were paid on collective performance rather than individual metric. The point being that it cost them a fortune whenever they won the big trophies.

Which was why they got into such debt etc - esp Messi's wages, which were eye-watering.

As against that, even in the 7 years since 2015, the ability to capitalise on trophy success (corporate, sponsorship, TV, media etc) has also grown enormously, and Barca, like most of Continental football, has lagged far behind English PL clubs in that respect.

For example, if you compare the Camp Nou with eg the new Spurs stadium, it falls far behind in every single respect bar location (not much Spurs can do about that, though it's still London) and capacity (though 62k at Spurs easily brings in more than 90k at Barca).

This being despite the fact that when judged purely as a football club, Spurs aren't on the same level as Barca.

For now. Wink

La Liga have told them this morning that they're 150 million short. Unable to register the new players they signed until they cut and or raise another 150m.

With Real Madrid dropping two points at home yesterday Barca are now joint top of the table.

They seem to be having a right go this season hopefully it will last.

1-0 down and Lewandowksi getting sent off you would fear the worst! Brilliant comeback, Barca of last season would never have won that type of game, great fighting spirit!

Busquets starting on reputation alone! De Jong, Pedri and Gavi should be the starting midfield when all players are available! Some ending to Pique’s career too LOL

Barca will remain top even if Madrid win their game in hand.

Just shows how they've progressed this season.

Hopefully they can keep it going.
