True, but this is where financial sense would have meant not breaking the bank on every signing in terms of wages, and fees. The Man City and Chelsea model is not palatable to many, but there is a backstop there, in a financial sense. Trying to run a football club, in the old style, while shelling out the amounts they were, while also attempting to keep players as long as they could was only sustainable as long as the party with going on. If it stopped, well, it would become financially problematic.

Nuts to sign him in the first place considering $$ situation and how injury prone he is. I did read somewhere that the signings done this summer e.g. Aguero and Garcia may not be fully cleared. could've been just twitter nonsense.

I imagine Griezmann will feel the love when the crowds are back in.
Aguero, Garcia and Depay are not registered yet for La Liga. The word is the league won’t register them until Barca reduce the wage bill to make way for them and also get it down to near their financial rules level. I imagine they will all come up with a fudge to get them registered at the last minute and Barca will be allowed bend the rules for another season now that they have got rid of Messi off their books.

I'd say they were one of the clubs hit most by lockdowns. Far more ticket sales lost than most other clubs, not to mention all the tours they're missing out on.

From May this year:

"FC Barcelona has finalised a €500 million loan from US investment bank Goldman Sachs to ease the financial burden of the COVID-19 pandemic on the LaLiga giants, according to Catalan newspaper L’Esportiu.

According to the report, Barcelona will obtain €100 million of the loan immediately to supplement contractual obligations, such as players wages, before the 2020/21 LaLiga season draws to a close on 30 June."

https://insidersport.com/2021/05/19/fc-barcelona-secures-e500-million-goldman-sachs-loan/

Assuming this report is correct, they needed a €100m loan just to complete the season! Shocked

And you can see why Messi was keen to get out of Dodge:

Aguero out for 10 weeks. What were they thinking with that signing?

As against that, Barca are in such bad odour over the European Super League that La Liga won't want to do them any favours unless they absolutely have to eg. avoid seeing them fold completely.

Tough one for La Liga to play it really. They must know their TV revenues and general interest will take a massive hit with a  weak Barca, and the other 19 team will lose out on a big money-spinning game. #

It's in everyone's interest to get this worked out really

The latest refinancing of the Barca bank debt reminded me of the FAI when I read it.

Had an interesting conversation with someone earlier based on the complaints from followers of the EPL that Messi should've went there instead of a "farmer's league".

How often has the best player in the world played in England save for, perhaps, Ronaldo's final couple of seasons at United?

There's just about an argument for Thierry Henry but he never really performed in the biggest games for club and country.

The best players have traditionally played in Italy, Spain and now France.

Erling Haaland is possibly the only player who will break this cycle any time soon, despite the financial doping by several English teams.

In recent years, the PL has been hoovering up the best Managers/Coaches.

And while the game's Galacticos have virtually all been playing on the Continent, we shouldn't forget that it's only ever been at a handful of clubs - Real, Barca, PSG, Juve, Milan, Inter and Bayern.

Which mark my words will change as the Italian and Spanish clubs spend the next 10 years concentrating on survival, rather than winning the CL.

Meanwhile it will be interesting to see whether PSG can keep Mbappe while staying within FFP, now they have Messi and Neymar.

If not, Mbappe will presumably be the one to go and it's hard to see who else outside England could afford him. (Bayern, maybe?)

Mad story in Simon Kuper’s new book on Barca. Mbappe’s agent offered him to Barca in 2017 pre the PSG loan move. Bartomeu didn’t even ring the agent back to reject the offer. He found out via a WhatsApp message from another director of the club that Barca were not interested. Bartomeu had his heart set on Dembele instead. Then ended up paying double what Dortmund were hoping to get for him. They also rejected Haaland around the same time as he was not a Barcelona type player. Haaland was so young then you could forgive the error but Mbappe had just had a brilliant Champions League for Monaco.

They met with Dortmund's directors in Monaco and initially had only planned to bid 80m for him. Dortmund's directors come in to the meeting and told them they had to bid double for Dembele and they weren't interested in bargaining and we're leaving to catch their plane. Bartomeu agrees instantly.

You'd nearly forgive these sort of deals if they were carried out by someone who's not a business person, but that's exactly what Bartomeu is.

Shocking mismanagement.

Mbappe is in a great position, his club have just signed the greatest player in history. You'd definitely play a season with him, and possibly renew for a second season if Messi plays another year.

He's only 22, so he could play 2 season with Messi and still get his big move at age 24 to Madrid.
