I'm inclined to think the majority are.  One thing I never get is two players have a bit of argy bargy and they push each other but then it calms down and they start walking away from each other and then other players rush in and try to get involved by ''being peacemakers'' but actually inflame the situation and then the pushing and shoving starts again and it ends up with someone being sent off costing your team.  Braindead stuff.


another one is a striker is lazy after an attack breaks down and doesn't make any effort to get himself back onside and then suddenly his team has the ball again and he is caught offside when there was a golden opportunity to score had he actually made a bit of an effort.

Yep, the amount of players who get yellows for little trips or jersey pulls is ridiculous. If you're going to get booked at least give the other fella a proper good smack so he goes hiding and doesn't want the ball again.

Dumb stuff in the box.   I saw McTominay I think it was in some match recently.  Its a corner kick and McTominay puts both arms around the lads waist he is marking and yer man tries to mae a run to head the ball and McTominay pulls him to the ground for a blatant penalty and he sits on the floor looking at the referee with his arms out protesting as if to say ''what did I do?''

Defenders have to be lilly white especially with VAR.

Could probably name on one hand current footballers that i'd admire for whatever reason.

Most come across as thick, disconnected arseholes.

I don’t think thick. They are just following example. Be it attitudes towards umpires, cliche laden interviews, on field behaviour, it’s all part of the cultural shift in football.

In my opinion, footballers are no more - or less - thick than football fans. Or indeed people who post on football forums.

I mean, why should they be? They/we are all basically the same people, who come from the same demographic background..

Of course  footballers are inevitably going to be less well educated than the general population, but those people who confuse Education with Intelligence are probably themselves, well, a bit thick.

Or snobs.

Or both, in the case of rugby fans. Wink

Alan Gowling (Man Utd) in the early 70s was almost an anomaly. He had an Economics degree and was duly nicknamed Bamber after University Challenge presenter Bamber Gasgoigne. Our own Kevin Moran had a degree on arrival at OT in the 80s. 
It's not unusual now. Some more recent scholars are Vincent Kompany (Masters in Business), Juan Mata (x2 Marketing, Sport Science), Romelu Lukaku (PR) and Iniesta (x2 Biology, Sport Science).

Lampard has a GSCE in Latin, not a degree, big difference.

Our younger players are a good example of those who combined education with football. The model here suits it more in fairness. Georgie Kelly and Liam Kerrigan are recent examples of lads who went abroad with a degree behind, a masters in Georgie's case.

In the Burnley promotion team to the premier league under Owen Coyle, both Wade Elliott and Clarke Carlisle had University degrees, I think.

There was an article in The Athletic on the English FA's Academy system. One of the topics covered was young players' Education, including this comment:

There have been improvements in terms of the holistic education delivered within academies, with over 150 specialist education and player-care staff working across the system. Clubs employ full-time teachers — Chelsea’s academy has to report its players’ academic results, which form one of their performance targets, to the club’s ownership — and have struck up partnerships with local schools, with rules in place ensuring that every academy player studies for a GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) in at least eight subjects.

“The results achieved in GCSE maths and English by academy players is actually above the national average now,” says [Chelsea's] Saunders. “That’s a huge shift in terms of where we were 10 years ago.”
