You're probably right but it should also be remembered that at the time United were pretty much like the way Liverpool are today. Expectations were much lower, so time was more readily given. IRC, many ManYoo fans at the time - including one of my brothers - ruefully referring to themselves as long suffering! In the mid seventies, Stoke hammered 'em 3-0 & 5-0 at the Victoria ground in successive seasons, excluding of course, the season when they hadn't even got them to play, as United languished for a season in the old division two. ETA: As I said over in the other thread, Fergie's a one off, likely never to be repeated and will go down in history as the greatest manager ever in English football. The Greatest Manager ever bar none. One of his greatest achievements which is forgotten because of all the glory with United was winning the Eurpoean Cup Winners Cup in 1983 with Aberdeen. They beat Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the final. Can anyone imagine anything like that ever happening again ?

You can discover more about a man in an hour of play than in a year of conversation-plato

In time he will be looked back on as one the greatest British managers. Just hope he never takes up the England post...although he said himself that he couldn't as he would want them to lose all the time!!!!

To be a great manager you must consistently do the business in the top flight
Liverpool fans idolise Shankly and rightly so. He was the man that started the glory days at Anfield But, as is the case with Liverpool fans on a lot of things, they are too caught up in history and emotion Shankly got the club to the top flight but his record regarding winning trophies is hardly out of this world. Paisley's trophy record is far superior But Pool fans would do well to but bias aside and look at the hard facts Alex Ferguson has done it at the top over the years He might be a horrible man, but when the history books are written in a 100 years, it will be Fergie and not Shankly who they will look at as the best Agree with point above, Bob Paisley is not getting near enough credit here. Had he managed for longer, no doubt he would be the greatest Edited by The GerK - 25 Sep 2010 at 8:25am |
