There is a reason for that. He probably deserved a chance in a friendly or two, out of courtesy for the number of squads and extended squads he has been in, but he is a very limited forward who can poach goals at certain levels but offers very little else.

Been in any amount of squads, still gets named in some of the giant efforts before being cut. Unlike Maguire, Hogan & O'Brien, this is a fella MON has had a good look at, and doesn't seem to think he is up to too much.

If he has no intention of ever giving him a go, then surely theres no point to naming him in the squad in the first place? Rooney's not brilliant, but he has deserved some sort of a chance in a friendly over the last few seasons.

I agree he should have got a game somewhere, but it does very much look like MON was only naming him & Doyle in squads just in case someone got injured and he needed someone to sit on the bench or make up numbers in training. Rooney went to Moldova away & was left on the bench in favour of O'Dowda, even though he was the only striker on the bench when Long went off injured, that told its own story.

Signs for Salford City.. Swapped Europa League qualifier matches for trips to Solihull Moors.
The massive pay rise ended up being too tempting. Salford have gone full Billerciay this summer.

He will be better paid than most players in the EFL. There is a lot less interference from the powers that be regarding finances.

He seemed to be on the wind-down at Aberdeen anyway and had little chance of making an international breakthrough, so probably the right sort of move for him.
