The catholic church has been the biggest opposition to the republic. One could argue that it has been a bigger opponent than British imperialism

Passed by a roadside tribute rally to hunger striker Francis Hughes in Crumlin at a junction near the hospital on the way home from work.

Any particular connection with Crumlin? He's not from there I don't think. Thought it was a strange enough place to hold one rather than the city centre.
Wings? They're only the band The Beatles could have been.

Crumlin in Antrim is near enough to Long Kesh.

The connection is just by place name to Crumlin in Dublin AM?

I'd seriously doubt it.

Crumlin in Antrim is kinda near the Maze but that would be a fairly tenuous linK.

And as in the song I posted above, Hughes was from the town land of Tamlaghduff near Bellaghy in South Derry.

But that's what I'm asking. Is there any connection with why they'd have that rally at a roadside junction in a Dublin suburb he seemingly has no connection with?

It just seemed an odd place to stage a tribute rally. That's why I was asking.

I knew that alright. It just seemed a bit random. It probably was in other parts of Dublin too.

Never realised Francis Hughes and Thomas McElwee were cousins.

Completely off topic but is anyone following the Crumlin Shopping Centre facebook page? Some absolutely brilliant comments on it.

I pass that place every day. It looks like an awful dive of a shopping centre even from the outside

The chicken and chips take away looks tempting though.

4.5 starts on just eat. has to be good : )

Its a very weird depressing place. I tell you what its no Northside or Old Donaghmede. Now they were proper 80s shopping centres back in the day. Big shout out to Crazy Prices

Yup both lived pretty close to one another in Tamlaghduff. Thomas and his brother Benedict were both in Long Kesh at the same time of the hunger strikes.

My mums from around the same area of them and knew them well. She used to work with Thomas' sisters when they were younger.
put em under pressure!
