Pretty much yeah, sure he played 2 years later aswell.

Liverpool had Grobelaar
Everton had Southall
United had Leighton (?)

Would Gary Bailey have been in with a chance if it wasn't for the injury 2 years previously that more or less ended his career ?

But we should have lost the game England were better on the day. Funny then that we played so well against the Russian's and should have beaten them easily (1-1 ) and they were in the final Ouch

Only have vague memories of that tournament. I was part of the 1990 wave. But one quote I saw which sums it up is "We won a game we should have lost, drew a game we should have won and lost a game we should have drawn" Smile

There was the usual talk across the water that England were gonna win the tournament.  As I said in the piece, we were quietly confident.  And apart from the Liverpool lads we had and McGrath, the three Celtic lads Bonner, Morris and McCarthy had just come off a domestic Double in Celtic's centenary when the SPL was still competitive so they were absolutely buzzing as well.

The patronizing tone from the English was always liable to bite them and when you look at that Irish team, we had leaders from 1-11, strong characters, bloody good players who feared nothing.  Yes England absolutely battered us 2nd half but we dug in, Bonner was outstanding on the day and I'd disagree completely Planning, Moscow and Richard Dunne it wasn't.  We were the better team first half in Stuttgart and absolutely comfortable after we'd gone 1 up, the second half was frightening and dramatic but we still fashioned a couple of chances 2nd half, which we didnt' in Moscow.

If you saw "We can Beat This Lot" documentary by RTE/TG4 two years ago, on the coach to the game Kenny Sansom is doing Frank Spencer impressions for TV.  They were so far up their own hole it was laughable and his defending for the goal was pure Frank Spencer.

It was such a satisfying, beautiful day to be Irish that day.

Hoddle was the difference in the second half . His passing sublime . I remember Kenny Samson’s impressions , at one point doing Ronald Regan I think he said ‘ England are going to win today ‘ Tongue

Remember Big Ron co commentating saying what a lovely position to be in for Ireland bringing in Kevin Sheedy as a sub late in game . Sums up the team we had when he was only a sub .

I think Dasaev was the only Russian in the team, Spartak Moscow.
The rest were mostly Ukrainians playing for Dynamo Kiev.

The best pre match was surely Cloughie who I seem to remember lashing into McCarthy and Ian St John sat with a smile on his face,

How on earth did Bobby Robson allow interviews to be conducted on the bus to the game??  Ridiculous carry on.  Barnes laughing down the back of the bus.  They clearly were not in the right frame of mind.

Anyone notice out Euro 88 shirt was a darker shade of green than the one later used in Italia 90 qualifying?  It was more emerald green and the latwr version was more lime green.

Also anyone notice the plain emerald green socks in Euro 88 never used after the finals?  They had no adidas logos or rings on them.
