He was Commander in Chief..
No disrespect to Pearse at all, he was apparently a great man but not a leader like Connolly..
Just from what ive read ove rthe years etc..
i.e. Sean McDermott "I'd follow James Connolly to hell and back if i had to"

Connolly was indeed appointed one of the Commandors of the Republican Forces in Dublin during the rising which consisted of the Irish Citizens Army. Pearse, like Connolly was one of the leaders of the Rising, but unlike Connolly who was a trade union man and a good one, Pearse was from IRB stock. It was Pearse who on behalf of the IRB, shortly before Easter in 1916, who issued the orders to all Volunteer units throughout the country for three days of manoeuvres beginning Easter Sunday, which was the signal for a general uprising.

God rest gallant Pearse and his comrades who died, Tom Clarke, MacDonagh, MacDermott, McBride, And here’s to Jim Connolly he gave one hurrah, And he placed the machine guns for Erin go Bragh.

The Foggy Dew
|
As down the glen one Easter morn Through a city fair rode I. There armed lines of marching men, In squadrons did pass me by. No pipe did hum, no battle drum, Did sound out its loud tattoo. But the angelus bell o’er the Liffey’s swell, Rang out through the foggy dew.
Right proudly high over Dublin town They flung out the flag of war. ‘Twas far better to die ‘neath an Irish sky, Than at Suvla or Sud el Bar. And from the plains of royal Meath, Brave men came hurrying through, While Britannia’s Huns with their long-range guns, Sailed into the foggy dew. |

The 4 Courts of Dublin the English bombarded
The Spirit of Freedom they tried hard to quell
But above all the din came the cry "No Surrender"
Twas the voice of James Connolly the Irish Rebel

In Mountjoy Jail one Monday morning,
High upon the gallows tree,
Kevin Barry gave his young life
For the cause of liberty.
Just a lad of eighteen summers,
Yet no one can deny,
As he walked to death that morning
He proudly held his head on high.
Just before he faced the hangman,
In his dreary prison cell,
British soldiers tortured Barry
Just because he would not tell
The names of his brave comrades,
And other things they wished to know,
'Turn informer or we'll kill you!'
Kevin Barry answered 'No!'
Calmly standing to attention,
As he bade his last farewell
To his broken-hearted mother,
Whose sad grief no one can tell,
For the cause he proudly cherished
This sad parting had to be;
Then to death walked, softly smiling,
That old Ireland might be free.
Another martyr for old Ireland,
Another murder for the crown,
Whose brutal laws may kill the Irish,
But can't keep their spirit down.
Lads like Barry are no cowards,
From the foe they will not fly;
Lads like Barry will free Ireland,
For her sake they'll live and die.

AND I say to my people's masters: Beware,
Beware of the thing that is coming, beware of the risen people,
Who shall take what ye would not give. Did ye think to conquer the people,
Or that Law is stronger than life and than men's desire to be free?
We will try it out with you, ye that have harried and held,
Ye that have bullied and bribed, . . . tyrants, hypocrites, liars!

Irish patriots one and all. The thing that is generally ignored about some Irish patriots is that they were Protestant which should remembered by those who think the problems we had in Northern Ireland were all related to religion. It's not, like in 1916, it had to do with national identity. British and Irish. Anyone who wants a good read on the subject of the 1916 rising should read "Rebels" if they had not done so already. Padraig Pearce starting the whole thing on his bike. Priceless.
