Fletcher was an integral part of a Manchester United team which won five league titles and a European Cup.

He was an extremely underrated player and a brilliant professional who did his work in a quiet and unassuming manner. His absence was glaring when he was suspended for the 2009 Champions League final.

A class act.

How do you conclude that all these players are better than Silva? An almost done Silva is keeping one of them who should be at the peak of his powers out of the team week in week out.

None of the above have won a CL (Bar Yaya) so all are over rated, using your logic.

How do you compare goalkeepers with strikers and midfielders?

Which one of these is Silva better than?

All are/have been more valuable to their team than him

That's how you rank players. Their importance to their team and how they perform in big matches

He's been better than all of them over the time he's been at City, apart from Aguero I would say.

I love the way people keep stating that Silva is "class", but they never mention how or why or what he does, or what he has done, except to say, "oh he was very good in that early season 6-1 victory over Manchester United in 2011".

In other words, they have pretty much nothing to back up the hype.

Silva's performances in big games for Manchester City have been generally pitiful.

Control
Ball retention
Weight of pass
Balance
The number of assists
Taking the ball on the half turn and sliding it perfectly into the path of a striker or a flying wide man
His link up play with Aguero and to a lesser extent Sane whenever he plays

So, he's able to do the basics you'd expect from any professional footballer?

Wow, you've convinced me, anyway. LOL

That Alan Kernaghan lad was amazing, by the way. He could kick the ball and head it - not simultaneously, now - only the true greats can do that, like Chris Brass.

I see a lot of professional footballers who can’t control a ball, an even larger amount who can’t retain a ball, and even greater than that is the number of professional footballers who have no idea how to weight a pass.
There are a lot of all the above playing in the premier league and champions league as well.

As an Ireland fan you should know that all professional footballers do not possess the above skills that I named Silva as having. They aren’t “basics”
We’ve had one player in recent years (Hoolahan) who had some of those skills who plied his trade in the lower leagues for most of his career and he was viewed as some sort of Irish Iniesta

When did you last see an Irish player take a pass on the half turn and slide a through ball into a strikers feet behind a defence? It’s basics apparently, all professionals can do it!!

But how many have you seen tepidly scuff a corner over the goal line in a manner reminiscent of that Kerry goalkeeper who kicked the ball over his own goal line against Mayo a couple of years ago?
