I don't see a World Cup thread, and with Ireland out, it could do with one.
Today we had complete contrasts. The solid Jamaicans have knocked-out Brazil, while the exciting South Africans have advanced at the expense of Italy. The round of 16 is almost complete. Switzerland v Spain Holland v South Africa Japan v Norway Sweden v USA Australia v Denmark France v (probable) Germany England v Nigeria (probable) Colombia v Jamaica

England with a very soft looking quarter of the draw.

Germany out now as well. It's interesting that some of the traditionally strong football countries have not made it through the groups.

Japan, Spain, Sweden, USA, Netherlands and France are the only nations that I can see stopping England.
Maybe Australia with a fit Sam Kerr. England should reach the semi-finals based on them avoiding most of these nations on their side of the draw. |

I think Brazil and Canada are out because time has caught up with them, but Germany are out because of complacency. The Germans kept attacking Korea through the middle when they needed to get if wide, and cross it in to Popp.
On the few occasions they actually did that she looked like scoring. ROUND of 16 is complete. Switzerland v Spain If they aren't careful Spain could beat Spain, and send the Swiss through. --------------------------- Holland v South Africa The Dutch are obvious favourites. South Africa are direct and pacey, but they will need to defend better at set-pieces to have a chance. --------------------------- Japan v Norway The Japanese have been on fire. --------------------------- Sweden v USA The Americans are holding on by their finger tips, and Sweden should send them out. --------------------------- Australia v Denmark The Danes are the least interesting team left in the tournament. Heaven help us if they eliminate the Aussies. --------------------------- France v Morocco France all the way. --------------------------- England v Nigeria Difficult to see anything other than an England win, with Lauren James running the show. --------------------------- Colombia v Jamaica Colombia looked excellent against Germany and will need to replicate that type of performance. While Marta couldn't beat Jamaica, Caicedo should.

South Africa out after putting in another excellent performance. And it begs the question - what is going on with seeding in this tournament?
Yesterday the top Group A teams were beaten 8-2 (on aggregate) by the Group C teams. I think six teams in Pot 4 got wins in the competition, while six of the eight teams in Pot 2 underperformed. With South Korea being particularly terrible in every possible way. The FIFA World Rankings seem to bolster Asian teams at the expense of African ones.

Good VAR calls in the England Nigeria game. A peno awarded to England overturned and Lauren James yellow rescinded and red given for a stamp.

Ye that was a definite peno. Worthy of a VAR check at the very least.

Nigeria fairly wasteful in the final third - will probably come back and bite them in the ass now.
