JD Wetherspoon boss Tim Martin has said the pub chain could be under threat as people have realised there are cheaper ways to drink.

Martin said his company, which has almost 900 pubs across the UK, had a ‘momentous challenge’ on its hands to tempt customers back after lockdown.

He also said Wetherspoon hasn’t made a profit since the pandemic, with sales unable to reach the same level as they did in pre-pandemic 2019.

The Wetherspoon boss believes that now punters have seen the cheaper prices on offer in supermarkets, they may not fancy going back to pubs.

Wetherspoons is as much a pub as UCD is a football team.

Do you have shares in Wetherspoons DM?  Let me guess you invested 2 months before the pandemic?
It would damage this forums' reputation

I hate Wetherspoons but the price of drink in Irish pubs is getting beyond a joke and their greed is the only thing that will put them out of business as people stay away.

Yes.  They never actually opened here but owned the premises and had applied for planning permission etc.   I was dead against them coming but then when the pubs started ripping off people post covid so was for it in the end but now they've had it away.

No takers for 4 Wetherspoons Pubs including in Cork and Waterford at €10m price tag. Linen Weaver still up for sale despite 'Spoons announcing big jump in profits. One of Cork's busiest and most prominent pubs - the Wetherspoons-owned Linen Weaver - remains on the market

Bumped into Harry Arter in spoons after the match on Saturday. Stopped in as a halfway point between the stadium and The Confession Box.
