Bizarre situation. This is different to what China tried in the 2010's, in that they somehow conflated the club game with international development, their long term goal being progressing the national team (and winning the World Cup). Or even in the US. where there is a massive competition amongst sports. Like LIV, this is a 'product', and another Super-League-esque, with the goal to rival the traditional leagues. And, there is no guarantee that won't succeed. Especially as fans are changing, with a weird loyalty to certain players (there is an aspect of right wing culture war there), and streaming services will generate easy access to Saudi Football, which is not a wild different timezone to GMT. Younger fans may well be sucked into taking an interest in this especially as Ronaldo is there, and more will follow.

Someone fire a list of teams up so we can all pick one to support and spend our spare time arguing on here about it.

Another reason to stop watching football.
I wonder who the first Irish player will be. Edited by horsebox - 30 Jun 2023 at 10:24am |

How long until they are looking to join the UEFA champions league?
Or more likely, that there 4 main Saudi clubs are coming in as part of the new super league alongside the other European super league teams. Like HB said, you wouldnt be bother watching the club football the way its going. Or stick to LOI

Jota from Celtic being linked too i see for £20+ million. Interesting if the Saudi clubs start going for this kind of player profile (I.e. Young with potential) as well as the superstars. If nothing else it would make the product more watchable than what was tried in China a few years back.
A Super League by proxy in Saudi is where this is heading |

Great to see all the Premier League fans losing their minds over the Saudi league without a hint of irony.

Spot on. Gary Neville losing his mind over it because Chelsea are selling players to Saudi teams in what he believes is a "conflict of interest" yet he had no comment on Watford signing players from Granada and Udinese, or Nottingham Forest loaning players to Olympiakos. When the Qataris inevitably complete their takeover of Manchester United, there's no doubt he will be delighted.

Carragher, Neville and co are outspoken because they want English football to stay strong. It's where they earn their money. The Premier League has a stranglehold over the other leagues financially. This could disrupt that. BT and Sky won't like it.
Carragher already told Guillem Ballagué to do one when discussing how the other top leagues like La Liga can't compete with The Premier League, on CBS a few weeks ago. Neville is a part owner of Salford City. Their ambition is to become a PL club. They missed out on League One football in May. I could see them in The Championship within 4-5 years.
