Barcelona restored their four-point lead at the top of La Liga with a tense victory over Celta Vigo, who ended with 10 men in bizarre circumstances.

It took 73 minutes for the breakthrough - Jeremy Mathieu scoring the only goal with a back-post diving header from Xavi's free-kick.

Celta had Fabian Orellana sent off for throwing some grass at Sergio Busquets as he was getting ready to take a free-kick.

Lionel Messi chipped over late on.

Despite the significance of the result, the game might be better remembered for Orellana's dismissal with two minutes left.

The Chilean, frustrated with how long Busquets was spending to take his free-kick, picked a lump of grass off the ground and threw it in the face of the Spain international, who held his face and started to go down.

Great attacking fullback but past his best.
Would not suit the EPL.

In the interests of any kind of fairness, they shouldn't be allowed play the three lads at the one time. Barring injuries, they could not only become the first team to win the modern superdedooper fizzypiss banking cup twice in a row, they could win3 in a row. They could win 3 trebles in a row. Since these three lads settled properly together it has been a pleasure to watch. How many can they manage next year 150? I mean Suarez was a late bloomer this year and has 'only' 24 goals!

Barcelona went on holiday last May in buoyant mood after their superstar strike trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez had fired the team to the treble of Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey titles.

But three months later Barca begin the defence of their Spanish title in less fine fettle. First they almost blew a 4-1 lead in the European Supercup against Sevilla in early August, although Pedro Rodriguez’s extra-winner spared their blushes that time.

That should have been warning enough for Messi and company, but they then got embarrassed 5-1 by Athletic Bilbao over two legs in the Spanish Supercopa. Those poor performances really showed how the Fifa-imposed transfer ban is now beginning to hurt badly. Coach Luis Enrique really needs to add some fresh blood, but summer signings Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal will spend the next six months watching from the stands. Which makes even more problematic Pedro’s departure this week for Chelsea.

Speaking after the Supercopa defeat, Luis Enrique accepted a busy pre-season schedule had not been ideal preparation, but said he was still confident of retaining the title.

“La Liga has not started yet, and it seems we are carrying a weight on our shoulders,” he said. “It will be a closely contested La Liga season, I see my team convinced they can do it. We want to keep making our fans happy and being the reference point for everyone.”

That said, Barca start the season by returning to Bilbao on Sunday night, and have another difficult away trip to Atletico Madrid in week three. Centre-back Gerard Pique is suspended for both those games, having insulted a linesman during the Supercopa second leg. As so often at the Camp Nou, fans and pundits are looking to Messi to rise above the distractions and pull the team along with him.

I suspect he was doing this interview for some English newpaper or TV channel?

Barca's hand forced on big-three sale?

The perils of being the best -- and having three of the best players on the planet -- are front-and-centre for Luis Enrique and Barcelona. On the field, things are just fine, with Lionel Messi returning from injury to rejoin forces with Neymar and Luis Suarez, who admirably kept the Catalans' ship pointed in the right direction in the absence of their Argentine talisman.

But it's on the financial ledger where things aren't quite so grand for Barcelona and it could force the Primera Division giants to sell one or all three of their superstars, according to http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/6779039/For-sale-Barcelona-could-sell-top-stars-to-Premier-League-clubs-to-balance-books.html" rel="nofollow - The Sun.

The outlet is reporting that the combined wage bill for the club is a staggering 73 percent of the revenue they take in. That news, along with a planned £423 million renovation to the Camp Nou, has the team on the brink of a financial crisis.

The sublime play of the threesome has the Premier League's big spenders lying in wait if indeed a fire sale is in the offing in January. Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu insists none of his white-hot stars will be sold, but Manchester City http://www.espnfc.co.uk/blog/transfer-talk/79/post/2736337/chinese-millions-to-fund-man-city-moves-for-leo-messi-pep" rel="nofollow - have been regularly linked with a move for Messi and their crosstown rivals at Old Trafford are said to be smitten with Neymar.

The way this is currently going, things could get pretty hot in the winter window. Here, http://www.espnfc.co.uk/club/barcelona/83/blog/post/2734982/how-barca-success-can-be-sustained-by-selling-camp-nou-name" rel="nofollow - Graham Hunter explains some of the club's revenue-boosting options in his latest column.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is looking to complete an "unforgettable" year with a fifth trophy when they play in the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan.

Barca, who face Guangzhou Evergrande in Thursday's semi-final, have won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Champions League and Uefa Super Cup in 2015.

In 2009 they won all six trophies, including the the Spanish Super Cup.

"That time we won, everything looked unrepeatable. We weren't sure if we'd get close to it again," Messi said.

"And here we are. Now what's left for us to do is end the year in the best possible way and make it unforgettable."

The final is on 20 December, also in Yokohama.

Kidney issues are a ramification of prolonged steroid use.
