I've thought the same in the past but it would become seriously controversial then. I don't think the rules need more subjectivity.

True, there will always be controversial calls, but there are so many as it is. It removes all the debate where the foul took place and would also help with the handball debate. A referee is much more likely to give a free-kick than a penalty. |

I’m liking the handball rule. The more liberally handball is penalised the better for me.

Just reading the article and I am confused by the first law. I did a referee's course and a bit of local reffing back home, it was one of the first questions I asked and was told a player can never score with his hand and now they are saying it is a new rule? As for time-wasting... I always felt that making a game 60-70 minutes long and stopping it every time the ball goes dead, like in rugby, would completely rid the sport of the problem.

God help the poor f**kers who had grammar/spelling mistakes on the match card, I'd say they got given the death stare

I don't think it is possible to make a mistake on the match card! Unless they can't spell their own name.

Sunday just gone, the local reporter at our game copied the details of the match card and still managed to get about 5/6 players names wrong (spelling) you'd be surprised.
One thing I would never do is be a ref, people say it's handy money but the abuse and drama that comes with it just doesn't do it for me.

I will never be surprised by the stupidity of people! Adults matches were fine. The first player to moan went in the book and the others usually learned from it. It helped if you called the two captains in and told them the situation. I gave it up after being attacked by a father at an under 8 blitz!

I would like to see more of that happening at local level, rarely if ever happens up here. Some parents are absolute pricks, this winning at all costs mentality is frightening. One of my mates (he was only a chap at that time 15/16) went to a ref an under 12 match and during the game one of the players pissed on his gear bag. |

I can never understand how referees take the abuse they do, especially in professional football. I think it is irresponsible as it feeds into the amateur game and makes kids think it is acceptable, but they also must have no self-respect!
People always look at refereeing in rugby, but rugby referees just keep control of the game. It isn't difficult. Call the two captains and/or coaches over at the start, tell them that it is about mutual respect and the rest will take care of itself.

That penalty rule was desperate. Glad it was scraped. A rule I'd like to see is the clock paused while the ref goes to VAR

As the laws of game 2018/19 state only intentional handball is penalised. You can score with your hand once not intentional handball.
The referee should add all additional time including VAR review time lost at the end of each half. Any changes will come in from 01 July.

Koscielny's goal against Burnley comes to mind, even though I think that was a case of the officials missing the incident rather than an "intentional/unintentional" debate.

Something has to be done about the handball rule, that penalty decision tonight was baffling and brings me back to removing penalty areas...

Why, when did you remove penalty areas before?

When I bought the green paint. I mentioned it above yesterday as a way of ending professional fouls. It would also stop decisions like tonight being so decisive, although you will never completely remove human error.
