Years of failure and mismanagement has finally come home to roost for Cork GAA. Páirc Uí Chaoimh to become Supervalu Park.

A dark dark day for Cork sport.

At 300 grand a year they are right. Supporters will still call it by its real name same as any stadium.

Pretty much every stadium in the world has a corporate sponsor these days

They're dead right. At this stage the only question left is should croker add a sponsor before it's name. So AIG Croke Park would be an example. You'd imagine they'd get at least a million a year maybe more.

Considering how much the GAA reinvest into grass routes and county teams it's a good Idea.

I'm in 2 minds about this. The majority of GAA stadiums, unlike say soccer stadiums in the UK, are named after people who made significant contributions to the Association. Many of them were also instrumental in the foundation of the Irish state. If the GAA goes down this road, where does it end. Will the Sam or Liam trophies become the Barclays Football/Hurling Cup in the future (look at the 'Heineken Cup' in Rugby)

In saying all that, as you've quite rightly pointed out the GAA do actually put it's revenues back into the grass roots and communities throughout the island. This would be significant money for old rope essentially

Well they've already sold the All Ireland naming rights before?

Didn't it used to be the Guinness All Ireland Series?

They currently sell the name for the league's and pre season cup's. Allianz Leagues etc..

I think the best solution to croker is keeping Croke Park as part of the name not a full rebrand like the Aviva. Obviously you'll get less money for that but imo the GAA should maximise it's revenues.

I'd be against selling the naming rights to Croke park - I just don't think it's needed.
Cork sold the rights to get themselves out of a hole with the debt they have accumulated.
Croke Park is owned centrally and there isn't a debt there so not a similar situation.

Has this not being going on for years already?

Kingspan Breffni Park in Cavan.
UPMC Nolan Park in Kilkenny.
Netwatch Cullen Park in Carlow.
LIT Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

I'm sure there are many more but those were the ones to spring to mind.

There was a time when the above would have been unthinkable. There will come a time when croker does the same. A 10 year deal could pull in over 10M. Why wouldn't we want this.

I think the difference here is that PUC won't be in the name if what has been reported is true.

It won't be it just show's it's inevitable croker does it when cork have removed the name altogether. I get why cork are doing this though because they have a big debt burden on the clubs. Every little helps.

Decent game at Croke Park tonight.  Thought Dublin through it away but O’Hanlon for Monaghan is some player.  Going to be an interesting league with Dublin and Kerry both losing at home on the first night.

Anyone see Tony Scullion on TG4 last night? Started off like jaysus hes a real bogman but you couldn't help but warm to him (ps. i'm a country man too). Type of guy it appears they looked up to in the Derry dressing room. A wild man on the field i'd say, tough. I wouldn't fancy seeing him lose his temper LOL Can't say i really remember him, bit young at the time. Good episode.
