“THE MONARCHY is a fundamentally racist institution,” said Republic CEO Graham Smith at The World Transformed (TWT) festival in Liverpool today.
Mr Smith was addressing a meeting on how to abolish Britain’s monarchy, with the republican activist saying the institution was “based on racist notions of bloodlines from a single, white, Protestant family from this country.”
The monarchy, slavery and empire are absolutely wedded to each other, Mr Smith told the TWT festival, a socialist alternative conference running along the Labour Party’s.
He said: “In terms of slavery, that dates back to Elizabeth I deliberately investing in the early expeditions that trafficked Africans across the Atlantic.
“Every monarch since Elizabeth [until it was abolished] invested in the slave trade.

“Last year, [King] Charles inherited an estimated £650 million from his mother. She would have inherited huge amounts of money from her father, and back and back and back.
“So it’s reasonable to assume that a significant lump of that money he is now sitting on, is from empire and slavery.”
Most people in this country are not particularly enthusiastic about the monarchy, Mr Smith said, and can be persuaded to get rid of it.

“Some polls show support for the monarchy down to 55 per cent,” he said.
“A few years ago it was well into the 75 to 80 per cent area.”

The next step, he said, was to galvanise those who want to abolish the monarchy to persuade others. The important bit is then to put pressure on those in power.
He added: “If we don’t put pressure on them, then the government will keep on doing nothing about it.”

Howard Gayle was spot on.

But of a debacle in Rochdale involving the Labour candidate and comments made. Labour have now withdrawn support for the candidate in a constituency where Labour have generally be strong over the past 25 years. The other concern is this would open the door for George Galloway who is standing.

He did get back into Parliament in 2012. Shockingly poor on Labour’s part in a constituency they should have won with ease.

interesting to read Forde's comments around it and how antisemitism was used as a "factional weapon" with regards to Corbyn, and how this seems to be reinforcing that that hasn't changed

Two hammerings for the Tories in tonight’s by-elections in Kingswood and Wellingborough, losing heavily to Labour in both. The former was won by Cork born Damien Egan. Hard to see how the government can limp on until autumn at this rate. Odds must now be on an early general election. May 2nd ?

Fair play to the electorate for switching their vote, one of the strengths of the UK voting system where change can happen unlike here where the constitution was designed so that either FG or FF will always be in power.

And ‘denied by his supporters’. Which in many ways sums up the position.

On the by-elections the results are becoming indicative of another 1997. You have to hand it to the Tories, how you can obliterate a majority like the one they received in 2019 is a true triumph of incompetence.

Merits and demerits in both system. FTPT is portrayed as a very egalitarian system but in reality it has maintained the status quo from the formation of the state until today.

But we have PRSTV in Ireland and it is better for smaller parties and independents.  In fact FF tried to get rid of PRSTV a number of years ago in favour of FPTP as it would have suited them.  PRSTV means that’s the parliament is as reflective of the will of the people as much as possible.

Under FPTP a candidate can win a seat with 40% of people voting for them or more importantly 60% not voting for them.  How can they represent an area when the majority don’t want them there.

FPTP is a bad system. Even if it comes with beneficial quirks. For example, UKIP losing one of their 2 seats, even though they returned 12.5% of the vote. In 2017 Corbynites spread far and wide how close they were to Government (a coalition one), while the Tories were actually closer (in voting terms) to an overall majority (albeit slim).

Mea Culpa, I meant we have PRSTV here...First day of the new season. Here a fella can get 900 first preference votes and get elected on the transfers from his fellow party member when a fella can get thousands more first preference votes and not get elected.
