    Posted: 19 Apr 2010 at 12:08pm
Was listening to the Radio on the way home and a group of councillors led by Christy Burke want the Docklands station to be named after Stephen Gately. Confused

I can think of a number of people who'd be more befitting such as Luke Kelly, Ronnie Drew or as one person said Tony Gregory considering the claims for the station to be named after Gately are beacuse of  the work he did for the area  Confused.  I think they'll find nobody  probably did more work for that area than Gregory.

There needs to be a petition started for a proper tribute to Luke Kelly.  Ok, so there is a bridge named after him, but come on... he deserves far more than that.

Dangerous precedent if it were to happen, where do you stop? Louis Walsh Dublin airport? A statue of one of the 'Irish models' opposite Phil Lynotts statue? Or closer to home, the soon to be opened Waterford Crystal (swing?) visitors centre.

BTW Good call from Denis on Tony Gregory, a politician who was only in the game for the benefit of his community, not like the majority of the shower we somehow elect.

Picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.....

No disrespect for him, sure he was a nice lad and all, but FFS people! What the hell are they smoking in City Council?!?! What exactly did he do for the local cause? Coming out of the closet....sure there's hundreds doing it every day, and he was more or less forced into it to save his bacon. Strange to bestow some kind of Martyrstatus to a man who died from pretty unnatural causes. Say what you will, but a healthy young man doesn't just die after a night out. Pretty sure there was more than meets the eye. And if there was, no problems with it at all, it's his life. But don't think we should make a hero out of this man.

Especially considering the great people that were indeed overlooked for God knows what reason.

Well said steve, plus we should consider the jokes that will eventually emerge about this, or tannoy announcements asking customers to use the entrance at the rear of the station etc...
