People have 3 choices, reduce their spending,  take the hit on the sales tax or to return the can or drinks to the shops. 

One little bag for life won’t take up much room. People love a good Moan about new schemes although it’s been in place in many European countries for 20 years or so.

Went yesterday with four old cans to see if it'd work. It took three but rejected a can of beer they didn't sell themselves.

Tills weren't set up to take the vouchers then 😂

But that’s the point you don’t need the 2l a day of sparkling water from a plastic bottle.  This is nudge economics and it will alter silly or soft spending habits.

The issue Id have is the way it is expected that Joe Public will have to deal with. Plenty of people recycle at home and bring their rubbish home with them. But here we are having to pay more money up front, bring it home to store it up and drag it all back to get OUR money back. There surely has to be another way. Governments could tell the massive multi nationals to come up with a better aternative than plastic and have it in place within a few years for example, but they dont. Or charge the big international companies per bottle if they sell their product in plastic conainers, that would be an incentive for for them to change and find alternatives.

Bloke in the job never recycled and was proud to say "it all goes in the same bin whatever has room". We were informing him this is all his fault but He is still saying it's all going into the same bin and doesnt give a feck about the charges. 

Would be Good to see after 2 years in operation what the improvement in recycling rates actually get to.

Can anyone answer if the deposit applies to retailers buying from wholesalers or at the point of production?

Feck sake no more 2L mix and matches in Tesco anymore with this

Bottles €3.20 each, at one point used to be 3 for €5

In dunnes they had three 2L coke for 5 (+75 cent deposit). Pay 5.75 but then you can later claim back the 75c.

That's is likely what will happen if the rates are not improving. Then most of us who try and do the right thing will be taking a further hit as well and then even worse for the people who, for whatever reason, are not able to or have the health to go to the deposit returns.

It's also kind of annoying as we are a tiny island nation compared to rest of the world so that 60-90% increase in recycling doesn't really make a bit of difference on the scale of things. 

Surely there could have been a better system to increase the recycling habits going from 60-90%. For example, proper audits and fines for the people who are misusing the green bins.

If you were to do that it would mean hiring people to inspect hundreds of thousands of bins, and anyone could just f**k some dirty stuff in their neighbours to get them in bother.

Maybe we are still too primitive at this point but there would be some hi-tech options possible to support such a process of correct bin usage. 

For example:
Smart bins (bins that recognize different types of waste and sort it into different compartments on behalf of humans).
 
New Wheelie bins with code activation / fingerprint technology to open so no one else is using yours. 

Auditing: 
-The T&C of your bin collection contract stipulate your bins can be audited. 
-Every now and again the inspector comes around on bin day with special truck and opens the bin to ensure it has been used correctly. Fine if not.

Specialized scanners in the trucks that can better scan and identify objects as they are being emptied into the bin truck. Warnings and fines if not being used correctly. 

A lot of that technology is pretty much available.

Someone I know got a letter warning them of the  contents from Panda. Included a photo. Thats the only one i heard of or know of though

Just to clarify our letter was from greyhound advising of camera installation not of any breach
