Perhaps that too but can't see him being involved with 1st team bar an injury crisis

Newcastle have Champions League group stage football this year, so I'd expect them to rotate very heavily for EFL cup games at an absolute minimum. Playing both Premier League and Champions League a lot of weeks also might mean they are reluctant to loan him out. More players on Premier League benches also now so there might be a space for him there from time to time if he stays on, due to injuries and suspensions. If he makes a bench there's always a reasonable possibility of a league debut with five substitutions available.

I notice he played cb when he played the 90 on Saturday. Is that the position where he will ultimately end up? Any time I saw him for Galway he was lb or lm?

That's where Newcastle have been playing him since day one so assume he's a CB by trade and Galway played him at LB given his age and inexperience.

He played RCB next to the also left-footed Botman too which is even more impressive. Is trusted to play across the whole back 4.

Just to speak on the anti-Irish sentiment. I've been going over to matches as a Newcastle fan for years and know the city well. Have never been anything but welcomed by the locals. You'll always get a few knuckle draggers like the clowns on the forum but I would say it's definitely not representative of the people and fans.

Living and working Newcastle now for the last 7 years and have never once had anything like this. The Tyneside Irish Centre is a great pub over from St James' Park and is a great home for the large Irish community in the city. Shay Given a regular frequenter when he's in the city.
I've lived here for 15 years and never heard anything either, not that I don't think such comments are made at times. Fans forums and twitter are a breeding ground for idiots and racists, best ignored if possible.

How long does a player have to be with a club to qualify as homegrown? Would Murphy qualify as coming through the youth set up after one year with the under age team?

Newcastle have brought in another left back, Lewis Hall from Chelsea, for £28m. Hall is three months younger than Alex Murphy and has made 12 first team appearances for Chelsea, including nine in the Premier League. Unfortunately this would seem to suggest that Newcastle plan to develop Murphy as a left sided centre back, rather than as a left back.

This was always the most likely outcome. He doesn't really have the profile of a modern fullback or wing back (Dan Burn is a massive exception here). Left footed CBs are a rare commodity and his ability to cover at LB is great for us should he become a full international.

Shouldn't stop us developing him as a LB imo. Same with Lawal as a DM. Though likely will only play there when Hodge is missing unless Crawford wants to play two DMs in certain games. Move Moran wide and a midfield trio of Lawal, Hodge, Phillips.
